Default First time diesel owner

Ok guys I need some help here. I'm a first time diesel owner. And don't really know too much about a diesel. Well here is my problem(s), when I hook my batteries up my glow plug controller starts to smoke from the wires. And the starter begins to smoke when I turn it over but only when I'm trying to crank it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It would probably help to know just a little more about the truck like year make model and the 8th digit of the vin number.

Ok that's a good start there are the batteries good and fully charged? And did you just buy the truck? Was it running before and are the batteries hooked up properly?

The batteries are brand new. And I just traded the guy for the truck. He told me all it needed was a starter. So I really didn't know if it was running or not. So I went and bought a starter for it. When I turn it over smoke starts coming from the starter or the starter wires, not sure which one.

The batteries are wired for 12 volt and not 24 volt right? I only ask because I saw it happen recently. Apparently their's people who think 2 batteries always =24 volts.

Otherwise you may want to check your positive cables and make sure something is not grounding out. I had one rub through the insulation on the frame and cause all kinds of electrical problems.

You may have one of the batteries hooked up backwards this would make it 24 volts instead of the 12 required.
