Default Intermittent Starting Issue

This isn't specifically a Diesel issue but this is seriously the most knowledgeable and helpful forum I have ever seen so I am hoping to get some guidance.

Having trouble tracking down a starting problem on my 82 GMC 6.2l (4wd).

Initially, occasionally when I turned the key, I would just get a click the first time. The second time I turned the key it would start with no issue. This began happening more often and it turned into the third or fourth turn would start it but it always started.

I thought it might be the solenoid so I pulled the starter and raplaced the solenoid. I rebuilt the starter while I had it out. Once back in the problem still occured though maybe less frequently.

Now, the problem has gotten suddenly worse to where I can turn the key 20-30 times with nothing - not even a click. Then suddenly one more time and it will start as though nothing is wrong.

Finally, today when I tried to start it, the starter spun up and didn't stop when I released the key. It kept going even after I turned the key to the off position and removed the key. It kept going until I turned the key back and forth a few times. Because it was really cold, it didn't actually start.

I suspect it might be the ignition switch itself and have one ordered but that thing is a pain in the *** to get out so I am hoping to get some advice on whether I am chasng the wrong solution.

The batteries are Diehards, are under 2 years old and charged.

Load test the batteries with the cables unhooked.

Check you battery cables out.

You can test the starter / ignition switch by installing a push button for a temporary

Thanks. I'll be doing that. As well as testing the positive cable.

The ignition switch is fine so I believe I might have two separate issues: the battery or cable is causing the intermittent start and the solenoid is causing the non-stopping cranking.

A lot of these old vehicles have iffy battery CABLES.

If you see any bulge or anything and the cable is old, Just replace the cable. A lot of these cables have interior corrosion.
