Default Check Engine Light

OK, so I'm new to the forum and to diesels. I'm currently looking at a few late 90's Suburban 2500 w/ 6.5L turbo. One is a 1999 w/ 200K miles, lots of regular maintenance records and in really good shape. The bad is the guy said the check engine light has been on for three years. He said he replaced all associated code sensors and had several mechanics look at it and can't find anything wrong. Said throughout the three years it has had no additional issues and runs great. Would this be something you would even take a chance on?

I would have them read 1st, then write them down and see if they will clear, then come back here and post what codes are being "seen" by the PCM.

I'd need to know more about EACH vehicle to hazard a guess, year, model, 8th VIN digit, mods added if any, where is the FSD (fuel solenoid driver) mounted on or off of the IP,

Miles on injectors and injection pump if known, etc. provide as much info as you can

Also for your own info look in the glove box the RPO codes RPO Codes.com- GM option codes,GM rpo codes,General Motors options (options on it when vehicle was built) are handy info as well.

And also what are your plans for it, 6.5s stock are weak, compared to modern common rail engines, can be made strong, but takes time to build correctly, if you plan to tow....5-6000# is limit for most maybe more with right gear ratio, and why you need to look at the RPO listing so you know what gears should be in it.

Thanks Turbine Doc, your info was helpful. Turns out the engine died before I even got there to check it out. Glad I was saved on that one. I just purchased a 96 Suburban LS, 6.5L TD w/ 176K, 8th VIN digit = F. Pure stock and really clean. Unsure of how many miles on injectors and pump though. I plan to play it safe, change fluids/filter to have a maintenance starting point. Then I think a PMD relocation. Intentions are for daily driver, travel rig to pull small camp trailer, kids, dogs and gear (~4 - 4.5K lbs). Do you have any suggestions for first must do items? Thanks again
