Default 1994 6.5t need some knowledge on problem

Hi this is first time posting. My truck at the moment starts great has no funny noises at idle or while driving down the highway, but every now and then she just dyes. Slider in neutral turner over and off she goes again down the road. Goes for long drives and will be fine and then the next time out will happen a couple times. Doing fitre and oil changes every 5000 km and is just about do for service again so fuel filter will be changed again and see if that helps but what other ways can I check my fuel delivery system.

Find your fuel shut off solenoid and check the plug on it even if it looks good bend the prongs slightly to make better contact with the female contacts (cold weather can sometimes cause these to have a bad connection until the engine warms up and the metal expands) you may also check your fuel shut off solenoid and see if it's going bad or has a short where the wires go into the main body. if that doesn't work you can check your ignition switch although not extremely likely if it's only doing it cold. Then if you have a spare I'd check the pmd/fsd although again not likely if it's just doing it cold but that's always the number one suspect on these trucks and has several quirky ways to go out. If you've done all this and still having the issue it is most likely the governor in the injection pump (sometimes it starts seizing or binding when you change from your usual fuel additive to winter mix I prefer to run both or if you're not using a lubricating additive it can also cause this) If that's the case you can try throwing a lot of lubrication to it through your fuel and see if that helps or change the injection pump which is alway a last resort. But first clean out your fuel canister and change filter because this is also a likely (and inexpensive) cause because temperature can make a diesel fuel system do some crazy things. Take a turkey baster and suck the fuel in the canister out putting it into a clean mason jar and see what settles out repeat until clean fuel is all you can get out of the canister.

Hi thanks for the reply it's not only while the engine is cold it usually starts happening after 15+ minutes ofdriving.did the fuel filter yesterday and so far it's been running good. As for the fuel shut off solenoid would the location be shown in my truck manual? That sounds like more of what was happening thend just my filter. Wasn't a slow I'm outa fuel so I'll shut off it was more like a complete stop in fuel delivery. Thanks for the advise.

The fuel shutoff is a cylinder sticking out of the top of your injector pump right behind your oil fill tube on top of the engine it'll have a place for an Allen wrench right on top to remove it (I don't remember the size) and will have 2 wires coming out of it. And have you verified your lift pump and oil pressure switch are working?

No i have not got into it that far yet. I'm fairly mechanicaly inclined but have only had this truck for four months so still trying to get a full understanding on lots of these things to check and how. Have read to check the lift pump to just open the top of fuel filter and run a hot the the fuse for the lift pump but not sure on that location. There's a fuel pump fuse under the hood do you know if that's lift pump or injector pump. As gunna test yesterday but didn't want to be jumping something I wasn't 100% on.

If you bled the air out of your fuel filter by turning your key on and off then the pump is good your ops (oil pressure switch) controls the pump while the engine is running. To check it is very scientific leave your engine idling there should be a t-valve on the front of your engine open it if fuel comes out the ops is working the lift pump if it doesn't and your engine dies shortly it's burnt up and needs replaced with an ac delco other models burn up very quickly it's actually a poor design and they make kits to save the ops from the heavy load of sending fire to the lift pump some people also put it on a toggle switch. I'd check the ops first, it slipped my mind earlier because I was thinking cold weather. It's a very common problem

You can jump across from on the fuel pump relay under your hood (it's labeled) with a short piece of wire if your standing on the drivers side of your truck it will be the bottom left and right top contacts you jump to
