Default 6.5 black smoke and coughing

have 6.5, 90,000 ON NEW GM REPLACEMENT ENGINE WITH A NEW INJECTER PUMP AT SAME TIME. Put a new ss diesel supply pmd mounted on intake with #9 resistor although my mileage never increased at all and when i hit a grade the thing blows black smoke and feels as though I am loosing power. Have put new glow plugs and injecters in it 3000 miles earlier. I did find a bad connection with the lift pimp which we corrected. This did stop most of the occational bucking and stalling however I can still fellit coughing abit when I hit a grade (hill) any suggestions? The last two ccommercial diesel garages I have had it to did nothing but cost me $700.00 each. All that I described I did myself after the experiances with the garages.

Thank you!

You need to check for trouble codes-google "paperclip trouble codes"

and then list them here.

I suspect you have a failure in the vacuum system that operates the turbo wastegate, therefore you are not building boost under load and the required air to mix with additional fuel is not being provided.

Check the vacuum lines for cracks or leaks, diagnose trouble codes, verify required vacuum pump ability.

Vacuum from pump should be minimum 24" @ the wastegate solenoid and minimum 18" @ the wastegate actuator.

read your reply to my inquiry to late. Was headed to N.C. 9-6-14 , From bedford, pa. and only got to little orleans exit off of rt.68. about 40 miles from home. Truuck was blowing heavy black smoke up the hills but running pretty good. On the level running clean . As I said I pulled off at exit 68 from Interstate 68 because I started hearing some tapping noise. Checked it out under the hood,No Tools, and decided it was calling for a tow truck.I guess this probably calls for a replacement engine. What is the opinion of the people?
Looked at some remanufacture web sites, But really not sure which way to go with this.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Running without boost creates a lot of heat in the engine when it is blowiung the black smoke-that can melt things down.

You need to at the very least have a compression check done.

Might not need a complete engine?
However if you do,search teds trucks and stuff on google and ebay-they currently have some low mileage military take outs-long block only but it's not hard to swap over the required parts.
Price is about $3 grand.

compression check? I could more than likely do this myself right. I mean I have already stated that I am not a mechanic although I am tired of these garages ripping. I am a retired engineer and I can follow directions.I may take this on myself.

Harbour freight sells a cheap compression gauge set that works well I am told.
