fuel heater leak

1992 6.5 td. My fuel heater on the bottom of the filter housing has developed a nasty leak.

Can I pull the seal out of the heater and replace it? Hard to tell if it was designed to come out with the plastic ring in the way.

If not, has anyone come up with a cheap fix? Thanks

O-ring in the bottom of fuel filter housing will go bad had to replace them on both of the 6.5s I have had got them from a local parts house not sure but I believe they were less than a couple dollars aside from leaking fuel they will allow air into the fuel system.

At first I didn't realize it was just a o-ring. It was mashed so flat it looked like a seal built into the heater. Saw a few kits online that had o-rings for the heater and water sensor for $12.99 plus shipping. I went to my local parts store and got them for 50 cents.

Good I didn't think they were that expensive amazing that a part that cheap can cause that big of a headache.

Ok now things are getting crazy. After new o rings for the heater/water sensor my injector return lines started leaking one by one until I broke down and replaced them all.

Now the seal on my filter has blown out, not just leaking but pouring. These leaks have happened one after another making think their is a bigger issue.

Is their any scenario in which a pressure spike could cause all these issues or is this a incredible run of bad luck?

Could just be old parts wearing out. KRservices on Ebay sells the best injector return lines. The fuel filter has a seal on it that is one time use only, if you remove the filter, you need to replace it.

I think I have the same problem with the heater. Can I take the 2 bolts out and turn it over? The fuel filter was just replace a week ago by previous owner. The air gap underneath housing is covered in diesel

Yes just pull the 2 bolt and the lines. The line to the IP is kind of a pain. Be sure to keep it clean since it's on the clean side of the filter.

Might make sure your filter isn't leaking. I bought a couple cheap filters online and they both blew the seal within a couple weeks. Put in a wix and haven't had a problem since.
The line from filter to IP could be cracked as well. It's just rubber hose.
