fuel heater leak
1992 6.5 td. My fuel heater on the bottom of the filter housing has developed a nasty leak.
Can I pull the seal out of the heater and replace it? Hard to tell if it was designed to come out with the plastic ring in the way. If not, has anyone come up with a cheap fix? Thanks |
I believe you can yes.

X2 u can
|
O-ring in the bottom of fuel filter housing will go bad had to replace them on both of the 6.5s I have had got them from a local parts house not sure but I believe they were less than a couple dollars aside from leaking fuel they will allow air into the fuel system.

At first I didn't realize it was just a o-ring. It was mashed so flat it looked like a seal built into the heater. Saw a few kits online that had o-rings for the heater and water sensor for $12.99 plus shipping. I went to my local parts store and got them for 50 cents.

Ok now things are getting crazy. After new o rings for the heater/water sensor my injector return lines started leaking one by one until I broke down and replaced them all.
Now the seal on my filter has blown out, not just leaking but pouring. These leaks have happened one after another making think their is a bigger issue. Is their any scenario in which a pressure spike could cause all these issues or is this a incredible run of bad luck? |
Could just be old parts wearing out. KRservices on Ebay sells the best injector return lines. The fuel filter has a seal on it that is one time use only, if you remove the filter, you need to replace it.
|
I think I have the same problem with the heater. Can I take the 2 bolts out and turn it over? The fuel filter was just replace a week ago by previous owner. The air gap underneath housing is covered in diesel
|
Yes just pull the 2 bolt and the lines. The line to the IP is kind of a pain. Be sure to keep it clean since it's on the clean side of the filter.
Might make sure your filter isn't leaking. I bought a couple cheap filters online and they both blew the seal within a couple weeks. Put in a wix and haven't had a problem since. The line from filter to IP could be cracked as well. It's just rubber hose. |
WIX or Napa Gold and Silver are the same thing, every other Friday Napa has 1/2 off filter day and I can do all mine for less than $20
|
So get a new filter just in case. Is priming it a challenge once I sort out the leak
|
You can crack open the filter top n t valve and jump a power wire to the LP to purge the air out. Saves alot of cranking but probably not necessary.
|
Of course purging the air from the filter is needed.
otherwise it would take an obscene amount of cranking to expel the iar. I also like to crack an injector line loose to speed up air removal and have a quicker start. beware of moving parts after the truck starts when you tighten the loose line back up. |

The easiest way that I know to jump the LP is to place a heavier gauge wire in the G terminal under the dash to the positive terminal on the drivers batteryhttps://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/i...AuKUyfjiz64hED

Tried lookin up a seal for the heater side no luck. Anyone know what size o ring it is before I start tearing into it this is my daily truck so my time for fixin it is limited
|
Will see if I can find them for you:
Fuel Filter Heater O Ring - OEM: 12511962 Water In Fuel O Ring - OEM: 12511959 Fuel Filter Retaining Nut - OEM: 12511963 |
Thank you greatly appreciated. I searched pepboys advanced auto AutoZone and nothin. I'm just gonna replace filter again and probably whatever lines are there too
|
Called local Chevy dealer 11 for fuel filter heater o ring says I have to buy a new sensor because there's no o ring and that's 179 so can I just find o rings that fit for cheap
|
And is there a difference in fuel hoses like gas or diesel rated
|
I just went to my local parts store and matched them up with o rings out of their bulk assortment. Cost me 50 cents a piece. As far as I know their's nothing special about those o rings.
Ssdieselsupply also sells a kit if you want to pay $13 + s & h for two orings. |
Nah I'll just match em up are the fuel lines a headache to change out I was gonna do the ftb mod but no drill it tap tools
|
The fuel heater o-ring is a square cut o-ring.
|
I'm probably just gonna order it from ss diesel and the hd filter I have a new injector set waiting to go in so I'm just gonna get it all in at once. Then I'm gonna get ss diesel intake diamond eye crossover 3" downpipe and a full 4" exhaust maybe up the boost a few psi then the body needs attention until this motor goes
|
Could be wrong but I don't think Diamond Eye makes a crossover-they do make the downpipe and rest of the exhaust at a good price for the kit.

2.5" cross over Ss diesel supply sells a 2.25"
|
Great to see they added it to their inventory.
Must be fairly recent? For the longest time the crossover was not available from them. I don't buy anything from SS Diesel, all reports about customer service I have read say they have none after the sale. |
