Default Daytime running light diode?

I narrowed the Daytime running lights not working down to the Diode under the dash by unplugging it and using a jumper wire to let the daytime running lights work.
Finding a new Diode is not to easy around here, so .. Just what does this Diode do and is there another solution that won't burn out the lights or wires and let the running lights function.?

Diodes are common on ebay if you can wait for it.

It prevents back feed of power on that wire when the regular lights come on high beam so the switch and wiring are not damaged.
No work around I can think of?
