95 2500 4x4 6.5 td
Hey guys! i know the 6.5 diesel engines are not for show trucks but rather a work truck. I was just wondering if there are things i can do as in chips, turbo upgrades. exhast upgrades, or simply turning my fuel up to maybe get a little black smoke and some more horse power and torque for my truck. i am new to the diesel world but i am trying to learn and hopefully with the help of you guys i will have a great running/sounding truck. I have heard of people putting HX40II turbos off a cummins in the 6.5 and then adding a diamond eye exhast and their truck sounds great, but i was wondering if i invest in turbo upgrades will i have to fabricate it to fit or will it fit like the stock turbo. Thanks for your help and comments!
Turbo and exhaust upgrade will do wonders for your rig. THat is the most restrictive, in the exhaust system. Turning up your fuel to get "black smoke" will only cause your fuel mileage to go to crap. Black smoke is unburned fuel, which is also wasting fuel, which is also a waste of money. Plus that will cause your EGT's to run hotter. Do some research first before you commit to your mods. You wanna make sure your mods work well together, and in "Harmony", in other words. What you dont want to do is mod your engine without upgrading your exhaust system. Make it breathe more efficienctly first, intake and exhaust, before chipping or bigger injectors etc. THis way, you wont set yourself up for failure or big headaches. Oh yeah, get good quality gauges to monitor boost, EGT's, Trans temps, and Fuel pressure.
The HX-40WII is a common switch for these, I don't think its very hard, but if you put it in a search engine you will find threads on it of people who actually did it and write out how they did it. Exhaust is one of the best things you can do. For a 95 you can get a 6 level tune, I saw one on ebay, don't really know what kind of performance you'll get from it, but Heath Diesel also sells them and seems to be the trusted name in the 6.5 world. But if you do the turbo swap, you might make your own exhaust since you'll be running a different down pipe to fit the turbo, then you can go bigger than 4in. If you keep the stock turbo you can make a mechanical wastegate that will run more boost, but hurt mpg.
