What transmission do you have 2WD or 4WD what are your mechanical skills ??? I have had both an automatic and a NV4500 on the ground in about an hour when put the trans back in it helps to have 2 6 inch bolts with the same thread as the bellhousing bolts to use as guides this will save lots of time and trouble and a really good floor jack is priceless IMO

No way to prevent it.your rear main seal is constantly riding on crankshaft which turns 6-800 times per minute just at idle.the seal is simply made of rubber and after being 10-20 years old they start leaking. just make sure you buy a good replacement brand one such as victor reinz.fel-pro is junk!

Also make sure your CDR valve is functioning properly-it's purpose is to try and maintain a slight crankcase vacuum to prevent oil leaks.

Crankcase pressure makes the seal leak worse.
