Default 6.5 turbo boost

i have a 1996 chevy k1500 with the 6.5 turbo motor and the turbo is only pulling 1-2 psi of boost i thought that was normal but a friend of mine with the same truck just a couple of years older is pulling 5-9 mine is all stock and his is also is there something different about the motors or is something going out on my truck i have replaced the vacuum pump and all vacuum lines leading to the wastegate and have found no air leaks in any of the lines when hooked up to a vacuum gauge i double checked everything and it is hooked up properly what might i need to do next or is my truck running normal

This is the turbomaster you would need. I have the same one on my truck.....

Turbo-Master GM96 Boost Control [gm9601] - $129.00 : Heath Diesel, On-line Store

The EGR is controlled by the vacuum pump, so you would need to keep the vacuum pump for that. You can delete the EGR if you would like, but if your state has yearly inspection or whatever, they you have to keep it.

Read around on the Turbomaster. Some people have 'homemade" then for much cheaper than the 'real' thing. I, spent the extra money for the real thing since Heath Diesel is very reputable, and has EXCELLENT customer service! Ive called Bill, the owner, probably 10 times in the past two weeks with questions about my turbomaster, max-e-tork programmer, and just random 6.5L question, and he will sit on the phone with me for as long as it takes for me to get a firm understanding. Bill is the BEST man in the 6.5L industry, hands down.

Might be a simple as plugged soot trap or leaking exhaust crossover.

Boost is also a matter of load-cruising boost will always be in your range, towing or hill climbing put it under load and more boost builds.

it dont matter what im doing with it it always runs at 1-2 psi of boost i have a camper i pull with it and when its hooked up it will just leave a path of smoke so thick going up a hill that i cant see anything behind me it dont have a exhaust leak or does a diesel not make a ticking sound when theres a leak like a gas truck does also what is a soot trap and where might it be located i have a 1996 k1500 i also went to look for a brake booster for the truck and all i can find is parts for a 2500/3500 will the parts for them work for my 1/2 ton

Soot trap looks like a cat converter.

With the engine off, pull the vac line off the wastegate actuator, pull the lever forwards and put your finger over the vac port and let go of the lever.
If the lever stays put the actuator is likely ok and you may need to look at the wastegate solenoid. If it moves back to its open location the actuator diaphragm is bad.

Same difference but ONLY AC Delco is a decent replacement.

Check vacuum with a gauge 18"+ at actuator and 24"+ from the vac pump.
