6.5 TD Problem Child
Hey so I bought this 1995 6.5 about a month ago and i went trough a list of things to check before buying and it checked out. But ever since i bought it has been one problem after another. The truck already had all front end suspension replaced a new rad, alternator, batteries, Relocated PMD, injector pump recently, transmission and fuel tank. First problem was the harmonic balancer giving out on the drive home, then about a week later i noticed the turbo was over boosting (new boost solenoid and wastewgate actuator needed), then i noticed the engine had alot of blow by and so much of it it has been popping the oil dip stick out while driving, next the truck started to die on me while driving so i had the lift pump replaced and somehow it is still getting air in the fuel lines so theres still something up there. Also when I open that brass t valve for 10 seconds it does stall out but it also leaks the fuel during that. My question is, motor swap? or fix all the problems left ( if i can figure out what exactly is wrong that is).

I rebuilt one 2 months ago with some help really alot of help but if you swap used motor you still don't know what you have.If you don't have to buy IP you can rebuild one fairly cheap using good parts if you shop around a little bit almost every thing on mine came from SS Diesel supply,Heath diesel, rock auto and GM .But hopfully you can get info from somebody else here and it wont come to that.It is still pricey but if I can get another 304k its well worth it.

NEW PROBLEM truck started up this morning after letting the glow plugs cycle and then died shortly after. pumped the gas put on a battery charger and got it running. died 15 mins later while driving after i hit the brakes to take it out of cruise control. got it goin again after pumpng the gas pedal and drove it another 3 mins to school 3 hours later i got in it started it up and drove it for about 5 minutes no problems. half hour later went to start it she started up and then died about a minute after. now she wont start at all just turns over. no light in dash come on when key is turned but radio and lights work. any ideas?

The kill switch in this truck was wired into the wire that went pos to pos on the batteries. it was also wired into the fuse box and alternator. I dont think its the problem has anyone had problems before due the wiring in the steering column for the ignition and turn signals / cruise. Because it was when i hit the brakes to take it out of cruise that it would die or when i put my turn signals on. I got all the daash apart and i am not sure where to start

For the blowby make sure the CDR is working properly or replace it.
For air in the fuel system testing, replace the IP fuel return line with clear diesel ratd hose and watch for bubbles in that line while idling.Bubbles indicate air intrusion.
Air while the engine runs is most often getting somewhere between the fuel level in the tank and the LP-were the Orings on the line in good shape when the LP was replaced?
sending units develop holes as well.
If hard starting due to air is the concern, the water in fuel sensor Oring or the fuel heater Oring in the filter housing are usually the culprits of air/fuel leaks after an extended sitting period.
Your steering column trouble sounds like it could be a faulty ignition switch-they are multi contact switches that leave a dead dash/ECM but the blower motor and radio work fine.
