Now, as far as timing it the rule of thumb is to start with the marks aligned and go from there. it requires a special timing light made by Kent Moore which is no longer made and good luck finding one. I have the Snap On version of it. The probe goes in the #1 cyl glow plug hole. I will document this when I can get to it but for most they generally run best with the IP kicked about a matchbook cover to the drivers side. The motor should start good and sound a little marlbly under acceleration. If the engine is hard to start or sounds"too smooth" you are too retarded(to the pas side..move it to drivers side). If the engine sounds really loud and kicky, you are too advanced, kick it to the pass side. Never adjust while it's running but you can tighten just the top bolt for testing but once optimal is achieved, lock all three nuts down. Don't pry on the IP. Use an IP turning tool or stick two 3/8 bolts in the turning tool holes and use a pry bar between the bolts,. Prying against the case can cause damage.
