Default 98 chevy 6.5 TD won't start now

Alright I just traded my quad for this. truck its a 1998 chevy silver with a 6.5 turbo dieselostensibly got 175,000. on it.i drove it two hours back home when i got it and it ran fun when i first started driving it. Then it started to like misfire and take control of the throttle its self and then it stopped . When i got it home it starts just fine always i went to drive to to work and it started doing it again. and now it always does it no matter what. So i took the intake off and seen the IP and it looks recently new the guy said he changed it not to long ago. and then i looked at the connection of the POD and the OPS and they both looked good. The POD hasn't been changed. well i put everything back together and it started up just fine and i backed it out of my garage and i went to drive it and it barely accelerates and i could only get it to get up to 20mph ..but when it missile and i take my foot off the pdal it goes to idle and idles fine. It snowed last night and got around 17 degrees and i didn't plight it in and now it won't start and the batteries are low.it wants to start and roofs smoke out of it so i know is getting fuel but just don't wanna start. I opinion on.this problem is the PMD. But i don't know for sure. Please help me and give me some ideas on what it could be. I need to change the fuel filter and air filter. It also blows black smoke too..it almost asks like a passer with a choke left on and u try and drive it. So i hope u guys can help me and figure this out cuz right now i feel like I've lost my *** on this deal.thanks

Where is the PMD located? It should be remote mounted out of the engine bay, for example behind the bumper. Do change the fuel filter asap. Any history on the truck? Condition of glow plugs and starting system?

the pmd is still mounted to the pump....where should the ground wire be mounted from the PMD. Right now its mounted to one of the bolts that are on top of the injection pump...should it be mounted somewhere else cause you wouldnt think that would be a very good ground. The injection pump as been replaced already. so i dont think it would be the injection pump. when you turn the key the lift pump makes a really loud ticking noise. so i know its coming on. but it doesnt come on all the time. and like it wants to start like its almost there but it just wont fire up....

The IP harness ground is right where it should be.

Your situation sounds like a PMD problem and the best solution is to get a remote mount kit that includes a PMD a resistor and a large heatsink plus a quality extension harness.

As mentioned mounting behind/under the frt bumper or behind the grill on a rad support are some of the best options.
Leave the old PMD where it is and forget about it.

To prime the fuel system after a filter change you should locate the single red wire near the underhood fusebox and apply 12v to it to activate the LP-then bleed the air from the filter with the bleeder.

It might also be wise to have the truck scanned for codes-they don't all activate the light.

ok so i went to go and change the filter today and found a lot of particles inside the fuel filter housing. and also metal shavings. When you turn the key on the lift pump does turn on but it sounds terrible almost like its nocking really loud. so i think the LP might be gone or not pushing enough fuel to start it..When the LP is running and i open the T handle it only drips or just a tad over drips comes out...its not like my other 6.5TD at all...So im wondering if the LP is gone or is going. Why would there be metal shavings in my fuel filter? Could it be the IP or the LP. I will change the LP just because i dont think it should be making that loud knocking noise at all...my other diesel dont do that. You can hear it run but it doesnt knock or is as loud as this one. Any input would be very helpful. I still have a feeling that it could be the PMD.

You should get a steady stream of fuel from the T valve when the engine is running.A delco LP from a 93 is the best stock choice.

Shavings could be from the inside of the tank,or from the fuel source?

Default 98 6.5 Diesel PLEASE HELP STUMPED

Ok...I got this truck about 2 months ago drove it 2 hours home and it ran like crap. Misfiring and studdering but never stalled. I got it home tinkered with it for about a week and it wouldnt start. I replaced air filter new fuel with additive to get water out and diesel fuel injector cleaner and changed fuel filter, and moved PMD to wheel well. It started right up after i changed the Fuel Filter. I didnt change the PMD until after I got it to run. I drove it about 30 miles and it ran great except when your at a stop light and you give it gas to go it like takes off and around 2,000RPM as your cruising it will just go to idle and then catch its self and shoot back to 2000rpm. I will even set the Cruise and it will do the same thing. Its like keeping itself from shifting to over drive and staying at 2000rpm. So I came home and relocated the PMD and put it on a heatsink like everyone says to do. Well, same exact thing but a little worse. It happens a lot more often now then it did with the old PMD. So pretty much it will accelorate on itself when at idle or when as im driving and its like wont drift to the last gear. When you barely touch the throttle your taking off. its weird and it has all sorts of horsepower. If this truck ran like this all the time but more controllable it prob would have been a better motor with keeping up the competition. But i dont get it. I have changed everything like everybody as said to do and it still runs like crap. I bleed the fuel system so there would be now air in it. The LP is working ive done all those test, OPS filter is removed, IP has been recently replaced.. When its cold the truck runs great and normal when it warms up is when it acts up. and sometimes it will act up once and then stop until i shut it off. I dont get it. So any input would be helpful, a part of me still thinks that its sucking air from somewhere cuz thats almost what it seems like. On a gas motor if the intake is leakin and it sucks air it will idle higher and sometimes do the same thing. but i think it will still shift. I think the reason why its not shifting cuz its still trying to accelorate hard the so transmission kick down is still in the play. I dont know what else to do or go from here. So please guys i know theres some people on here that know these trucks so any input would be helpful please. I hafta take the truck from Indiana to Las Vegas in 3 weeks to get my other 6.5 turbo diesel truck so i really need to get this fixed and i dont want to take it to a dealer cuz they dont even know these trucks. Please help Thank you

Where did the recently replaced IP come from?
There are several "tremclad" rebuilders out there.

Also locating a PMD anywhere under the hood is a poor choice, the damage they suffer happens after engine shutdown when airflow stops and underhood temps skyrocket.

A PMD mounted under/behind the frt bumper or behind the grill on a rad support is much better.

Also they have no ability to heal themselves so moving an already acting up PMD is of no value-better to get a new one at that point.

Its a reman he got from diesel shop....the pmd is mounted under front bunper out of the engibe compartment....lastnight it got down to 7 degreesand it wouldnt start this morning.i have had it plugged in al day and still wont start..i have in my garage plugged in with the heater on to warm everything up and it still wont start but blows a mix of white and black smoke...so i kbo its gettinf fuel...i looked at the fuses under the hood and theres not a fuse where it says glow plugs nor is there a metal prog to put the fuse in so i found that weird cuz i kno this truck has glow plugs cuz i see them abd i kno it has them...anybody got suggestions?? ever since got this truck ive had problems and can never get it to run right.....i kno my resistor isnt in the PMD but i kno i havent had 50 cycles....but could it be not having the reistor....i ordered a #9 and should be here in two days...i want to get new glow plugs and relay new injectors and new lift pum with fuel lines and sending unit and new oil pressure swutch so the fuel system will be new and starting system then id like to get a 4in exhaust with a max etorq chip from heath diesel and swap out the gauges with a triple pillar with boost egt and trans..and put fuel pressure gauge on the lower dash so i can monitor pretty much everything...but id like to get it running and keep it running like it should and not accelerate on its own everytime i start it or drive it...what would happen if there is air in the fuel lines?? any suggestions would be helpful thanks

Which truck are you having problems with, the 95 or the 98?

And please, every so often hit enter a couple times so that your sentences don't run on so much-it's hard to read.
