Default Chev 6.5 Issues

Got a 99 chevy 6.5 with an issue here , the owner says it randomly shuts off while he is driving down the highway , seems to be intermittent, he says some days it does it multiple times , and other times it will go all week and only do it once.

yikes that means everything locks up on him too eh....? 99 you cant do a code check you have to take it to a dealer. but i can give you some things to look for.
this is all i found on it...
The engine stalls under deceleration or heavy braking: the idle speed is too low.: adjust idle to specification, also check and adjust fast idle solenoide.

Defective Governor wieght retainer ring: Remove governor cover and look for small black particales. If theyre present, a governor weight retainer flex ring might be the problem.

Binding condition between min-max block and the throttle shaft: To check for binding between min-max block and the throttle shaft remove the governor cover, out the throttle in the low idle position and slide the min -max govenor back and forth on the guide stud. it should move freely with out binding.

Sticky metering valve or linkage in the injection pump.: Remove the pump from the engine and have the calibration checked at an authorised repair facility, ask the repair shop to pay particular attention to the low idle setting and the action of the governor at low idle speed, the shop will repair or replace the metering valve or other governor components as necessary.......
hope this helps. ill go check another site and see if i can find anything more on that....... good luck, Jenn

good info Jenn. but the DB2 injection pump is on the older engines. the 99 has a DS pump. it is electronic. there is no mechanical governor or metering valves to bind up. the fuel is metered electronically. could be a bad PMD(pump mounted driver) or a bad encoder sensor. those are the most common problems. have it scanned and check for codes. Autozone or the like will do it for free. let me know what you find.

If it is a bad PMD it wont throw a code most of the time. Tell him to go ahead and order a PMD and remote mount with cooler. I had the same problem and it fixed mine on the Suburban and on my old ext cab I had. This is were I got mine. I got everything and the new resistor for under $270 shipped. The auction ran out and a few days later they sent me a second chance offer of my max bid of $220. I then bought the resistor and the rest was shipping.

How hard is it to install a PMD? The owner says he was told he needs a driver ( he is a little french , so I though someone was playing a joke on him and he was not understanding haha)

I have never worked on a 6.5 , but I'm heavy truck/equipment apprentice , so I would think I should be able to figure it out.

Yeah it is the "Pump mounted Driver" and very simple to install when you relocate it. Just unplug box and harness, plug in new harness and route to front bumper. Mount your PMD to heat sync make sure new resistor is in PMD and plug in. Took my 20 minutes.

Oh I just went back and looked. I wondered how that guy could sell the pmd so cheap. they are used. I throw those away all the time. these have been updated several times. so I cant say how long that used pmd would last. those retail for over $300 new. they may be tested but it is hard to duplicate the conditions on an engine and driving down the road with the bumps and all. I replace these on every pump I rebuild.
