Just wanna know!
Hello everybody, im new to this site. Im 16 and have limited money but I would like to know what is wrong with my 1992 6.5l turbo diesel. It starts fine when cold, but when gets hot just turns over till the batteries are dead. I have some, but minimal knowledge of diesels. My 2 main ideas is 1. IP pump 2. Starter/Terminals. Iv tried pouring water on the IP pump and it seems to help, BUT iv also tried the 2000 RPM test I heard about and also when the truck turns over smoke puffs out of the exhaust. This tells me that the fuels system is working as designed. Could it really be the starter, or should I just get ready to shell out $1,000+?

Could be a worn IP when hot having too much plunger clearance to build enough pressure to pop off the injectors properly at cranking RPM-that is why the water trick helps because it shrinks the housing reducing clearances.
For the short term a manual glow mod might get you over the hump for warm/hot starts by having the glow plugs operate at your command-google "Glow Plug Over Ride Modification".
The manual glow mod will also help with low compression from a worn out engine.
It is cheaper to try for the short term than an IP,and if/when you do get to the IP it will still be helpful.
Poor spray patterns from worn out injectors also affect smoking and hard starting-the general rule of thumb for injectors is rebuild/replace every 100,000 miles.

When overseas we encountered the same problems you mentioned. Being the old guy the problem was given to me . All our engines are mechanicle no electronic PMD only ecu. I hate to say it but my money is on your needing a replacement IP. Pouring COOL water over the IP will get you by for a while, look around for a used , tested unit and remember to get new gaskets for the intake and crowfoot wrenches for the injection lines.
