I just followed the directions here and I ran into an issue. I took out an Ac Delco TP 1298B and replaced it with a Baldwin. There was a rubber insert in the center of the ac delco filter. I thought it must belong in the new filter so I put it into the Baldwin. There was no way I could get the filter close to the threads so I removed the rubber insert and the baldwin went on what felt like a snug fit. So now i'm sitting here wondering what if the rubber was supposed to be in there and now my fuel is not being filtered. Hope someone knows of this. Please help calm my concerns or tell me to take it out and put the rubber in. It seems like baldwin would have includedd one like they did the two o rings.

Check up in the filter houseing for that ring. Sometimes they stick up in there and you'll need to fish it out.

On the new filter (and old one too) there is one rubber seal in the middle and an o-ring around the edge

I found this somewhere else that explains it better than i could off the top of my head. theres a rubber seal that sometimes gets stuck up top

pdate on this fuel filter change problem:

I discovered why the new filter would not even come close to starting onto the filter housing. I took a mirror and looked at the under side of the filter housing and learned there is a rubber gromet that fits into the center section of the filter head and when I removed the original filter that gromet pulled out of the filter head and stayed on the center tube part of the underside of the filter housing. The new filter also had a new rubber gromet in place thus the filter would not go.

I removed the old rubber gromet from the filter housing and again attempted to install the new filter but I still could not get it onto the filter housing far enough to reach the threads. WTF?

The fact that I can't see under there to see what I am doing and have my arms wrapped around the AC lines to where I cannot get any leverage is greatly complicating what should be an easy job. I am guessing the rubber gromet just needs to be forced and stretched a bit to fit over the tube and the filter pushed upward hard enough to reach the threads, but so far I haven't been able to make this happen. I am thinking of rubbing the rubber gromet with some silicone grease to hopefully make this doable.

t seems a little slippery slicone helped everything go together. Finally got filter on far enough to engage threads, tightened it up a bit, bled the system, pumped it up, cranked it up, checked for leaks. All appears to be OK. May do a test run to the grocery store later.

BTW, I did not have to remove the fender liner but did use the zip lock bag trick (learned here). Once the old filter was off and in the bag, I set it on the frame directly below the filter housing and could reach in the fender well, bend the lower end of the fender liner out just a bit and could get the old filter out right there. Reverse the process for new filter by setting it on the frame via fender well, then reaching down from the top to get it, and install on filter housing.

I hope all of this documentation helps some other poor soul get thru this with much less difficulty and challenge.

Thank you for this but do you think that the filter will do its job without the rubber gromet in the middle.

BTW the Baldwin did not have a rubber gromet in the middle.

remove plastic fender liner its easy and accsess to filter is better

I never changed filter in my 08(12K). I will change and add pyro at the same time now,thanks.

I did not see anyone mention using a patch panel for easier access ?

In addition to these i always open the fuel cap when priming mine. Top or thru the fender well they both work fine. I did see on ebay an access door to cut into the liner.

Guys, Last night I changed my fuel filter on my 04 d-max and overtightened the bleed screw on filter housing. And of course it broke.. We found that the caps off of a motorcycle battery (screw on caps) fit perfectly. Will order Stainless one but this fix works for now.. Hope it helps!!!!

yeah the bleeder screw only needs yo be finger tight

Default Great Fuel Filter Replacement Summary

2500HeavyDuty, Thanks for the detailed fuel filter replacement article. Removing the inner fender cover was definitely the trick that works on my '08 3500HD. Tried from above, even after removing the airfilter intake - no joy. Taking 10min to remove the inner fender cover made the job a snap.
