the car is too light on the rear that it would drag the rear tires to to a burn out. cause it doesn't have enough torque to break the static friction of the front tires. and the static friction of the front tires are greater than the rear tires so he has to get the front tires spinning cause then the friction on the front tires would be less than the rears.

It does help more than you think. I have a FWD 94 Olds Cutlass and I used to use the E-brake to do burnouts and make fun of the civics around town. It prob helped that I had a stereo weighing about 100 lbs in the trunk over the rear tires, but it does help quite a bit. I also did this in several Olds Alero rent cars I had over the years (I beat rent cars religously) and it worked on those too which had nothing in the trunk. These were both autos not stick so I couldn't even dump the clutch.
