what other options would you propose? They have no control over the satellite -- I'd rather blow it up than it hit a city or village or any populated stretch of land....

 

Didn't sky lab fall, awhile back? Where did it go. I never heard about it being blown it up..

 

Can they shoot it down reliably, without even giving it a second though. Can they do it reliably without using any secret technology that they don't feel it is worth revealing yet for this project, well I guess we'll see.

 

I believe skylab (or what was left) burned up in the armosphere above an ocean. The difference is that they think the satellite will survive re-entry and be mostly intact for a crash landing. If they blow it up they solve the problem. Also, if they can blow it up over the ocean no debris should hit anyone or anything on land. I think its the best option. Plus, we spend tons of tax $$$ on weapons. Let's test them out and see what they can really do. Not too many opportunities like this come around.
