Feeling pretty STUPID!
I did something just today that was pretty stupid. (Long Story)
I got a fire call at Hoot's in Whitebird, ID. I bounced out of the house with radio in hand and responded to the fire call. Fired up the Cummins and flipped on the red lights and let it warm up slowly for the first 5 miles. Then I kicked up the Comp on 4x4 and let the smoke roll. I had to travel 45 miles to the fire. Knowing there is a fire station less than 200 yards from the fire it was easier to run to that station and grab a truck. It was the enjoying trip to pass state cops and county cops rolling at 80 MPH! Half way there the fuse blew out for the red dome lights. DAMN! So I switch on my hazards and kept rolling. I got to the scene and the fire was knocked down. So I pulled up to the station and parked. Knowing the pyro is at 600*F I left it idle. I got out and shut the door. I talked to the Chief and told him I grab my gear and and help with clean up. Went back to the truck and found the doors where locked and the engine still running. The rear window on the quad door was open! Whew... But how in the hell was I going to reach the lock? I ran back to the fire scene and found a burnt bucket but the handle was intact. So I pull the handle off and bent it into a hook. Well the handle was too short to reach so I crammed my arm in through the window. I can reach the lock knock but just could get it to lift. During this time the pyro was getting low so I want to shut down the engine. The only thing I could do was disconnected the fuel line and starved the engine out! I got that done... One of the fight crew found a piece of strap metal on the ground and told me to try this. I got it bent and fished for another 30 minutes trying to get the lock up. BOOM! I got it...
So I'm going to get me a second key cut and put it in my wallet... I really do feel stupid. Especially after all my crew was laughing at me.
I figure I would share this tidbit to hopefully keep someone from doing this to themselves...

alot of antenna screw off.
mine on my dodge does with out a wrench.
you can bend that around easily to unlock a car.
amazingly enough thats what i did yesterday. not on my truck but a nissan pathfinder.
or i would have just broke the window out. i can get a used window at the junk yard for $20
depends on how much of an emergency it was.
cuz we also own a small wrecker service and have all tools nessary.

I did the same thing at an accident scene. Truck was sitting and blocking traffic with all lights flashing. I did it a little worse than you though, my truck ran out of gas in addition to being locked out, and by the time my wife got there with another key the battery was deader than hell too.
So don't feel bad, I think we have all done it.

I got mine shut off by pulling the fuel line off the fuel pump and allowing it to run out. But all the lights and flashers were running too... So about a hour later I got the door open... I really hated to let the VP44 run out of fuel but the pyro was dropping really low from idling 200*F or lower about (hard to see from my angle in the cab).
But all is good I'm back on the road again...:hyper:
