Never tried Rosetta Stone. Best thing you can do is practice everyday.

I spent two years taking spanish in high school and know some but still can't speak fluent... It takes time.

My supervisor is trying to teach me Australian. My wife is from a German Mininite family. After 30 years of listening to it, I still can't figure out what she says.

???

All you need for Australian is a few 'crikey's', 'mates', 'cold ones' and 'barbies'.

Austrian, now that's something entirely different.

I've heard good and bad about Rosetta Stone too. I think the best way to learn is total immersion. Ask your girlfriend to talk to you only in German. Eventually you'll figure out what she's asking. You may not know the exact structure of the sentences, but you'll find out the words for objects and things.
My wife can speak Mexican Spanish pretty good, and has tried teaching me. But having our daughter has taught me better as we have a bunch of books that have English and Spanish words for things... and pictures! That's helped me a lot.
