Do we have any utility linemen on here?

I'm thinking about going to lineman school after highschool... and was just wondering if we had any on here.

Utility lineman? Is that like one that can play both sides of the ball, or one with good enough hands that he could double as a tight-end?

i'd say go for it man its a fairly dangerous job from what i hear but i know all the linemen around here make good money doing it

 

Yeah from what I've read, there is a great program in Nash, NC for lineman... and pretty good job placement... and some amazing $$$$.

Amazing $$$$ + small apartment == more $$$$ for my truck

 

Mingle, hope I can help. I've been a journeyman lineman for 24 years. First off if you're only in it for the money do this trade a favor and find something else. We have enough slatherasses out here. A good friend of mine opened an awesome lineschool a few years ago in Tennessee, website- NALTC.com- North American Lineman Training Center. He is one of the best I've ever worked with. He'll point you in the direction of the IBEW-International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. After school you want to get into an IBEW apprenticeship program. Excellent training and safety program. These apprenticeships take people off the streets, so if you go to lineschool you get put at the top of the list for acceptance. It is an awesome trade and once you get it in your blood, you won't want to do anything else.
A word of caution. Stay away from the non-union line contractors. Just google Pike Electric accidents and you'll find out how many men they kill and don't give two shiits about.

that's what i've heard i got a buddy that works for pike and he says its shitty

 

I've heard many things about Pike, as that is one of the only contractors around where I live (other then Progress Energy & Duke Energy).

It's not all about the money... I could go for any degree and make a living, whether it be business.. computers.. I'm not acting cocky, but I've got skills.

I love electricity... I always have, and always will. I was taking covers off my lights and outlets at 5 years old (ha, blame the parents who buy their kid tool kits for their 5th birthday.. some shocks happen!).

I spent around 5 hours today diagnosing an electrical problem in the wing of our school. 3-phase outlet circuit only reading 90.8 volts. Ended up being a neutral not even stripped up in a wirenut, and been that way for 6 years... running 10 or 11 computers.

Anyway! I love challenges, I love working in extreme conditions and being in the middle of the action, and I love being faced with things that you have to come up with solutions to...
