I was wondering if anybody out there transports cars? I understand there is LOTS of $$$ in it. How does one get started? I figure a trailer and just throwing out your business card to the dealerships is a good way to get going? I was thinking of running a 2 car trailer vs the 3, only cause of my SRW. But, adding airbags would probably work out fine, yes?

i'm never shure wether to believe him or not but he only worked week days
i think only 40 hours a week. he claimed to be making $1500 a week

 

Is that "take home" pay or total? If total that is not a whole lot... By the time you figure insurence, fuel, and food (gotta eat on the road). If it is tale home pay then that is 78k a year... not to shabby for 3 days a week!

We've got two freight and hotshot companies in my family. We got out of the car hauling business because of the insurance laws and there's too many independents that got into it. Its a major pain in the and if your not hauling at least 3 cars on every haul both ways your going to start loosing money. Hauling RV's seems to be a descent gig for a single operator if you have a longbed truck and dont mind the longhauls but it still has its quirks. The hotshot business is tough and you will quickly learn that you have to run 24/7/365 or your not going to make it. 3 days a week wont cut it and if thats all you are willing to run the forwarders will stop calling you. Turn them away once your ok, turn them away twice and they'll stop calling. Also, you have to build up your own business and your competing with hundreds of other companies and independents. Better have enough money socked away to live on for at least 6 months and thats if you really hustle. What can you offer that the others cant? It comes down to availability first (you jump when they call and never turn down a job), getting the load there on time and undamaged. We're now strictly oilfield and OTR because it's far less headache, greater returns, and we have a large client base already established. Ya might want to really think this over and do your homework before jumping in. I dont encourage anyone to get into the hotshot business. Also keep in mind that you will put close to 80-100k/yr on your truck if your really running.

 

Not to try discourage you, but Dangerous is exactly right, the liability and paperwork that goes with trying to get into it yourself is ridiculous. I do strictly ag runs now with a piece of equipment once in a while cause I can bootleg that. If it something you really want to do I would find somewhere to lease on, yeah they take their cut but its well worth it, for what you dont have to do. .02

 

Exactly, I should have mentioned that before. If your trying to get into the business latch on with an established company and let them take their cut. You don't have to find your own loads and most of them will carry the insurance on you for a smaller fee than independent.

 

a friend of mine and his dad made 200K the first 6 months, he makes about 350K a year now, and he only runs about 4 days a week for the auto auction in columbus.....my brother was hauling travel trailers and sheds in state and making killer money.
