Default laptop and desktop whos the best

well yall im gettin rdy to move into a house in hunstville tx to go to school and i need to get a new laptop (i havent owned one in 4 or 5 yrs so its time for an update) and i need a new desktop.

so my question is what good and whats bad. dont need anything super fancy in the laptop just something light weight with good battery life for typing during class.

as for the desktop id like to spend a little more money and get something kinda nice bc im gunna have it in my garage (bar is goin in the garage since my truck wont fit) and so id like good quality video and audio so i can have parties for the games and all

any ideas would be awesome. im not lookin to spend millions on them but i am willing to pay a little extra for a good product

All the big companies that make computers today are crap. Bloated, bugged Windows installs, cheap construction, usually with watered-down system hardware and none-too-great tech support. I'd either build my own, find a boutique builder or just buy whatever the best lightly-used or refurbished model I could find.

Desktop is going to be cheaper and more powerful than a laptop. Just depends on what ya what or need.

Dell is junk - dont know why most people dont see that. Who wants a computer that has propriatary parts liek they have? If my computer breaks its nice to be able to go down to the computer store and get a new whatever and pay a decent price without having to get it from dell and pay their stupid component prices.

If portability is what you need then a laptop or a netbook is the way to go.

But its hard to beat a desktop with a big screen. Build it yourself. Its not that hard.

Guys, read his post, he wants a "laptop and desktop whos the best."
For laptops, I like Toshiba. For desktops, HP-Compaq. Def. opt for teh extended service warranty. Nowadays though, computer companies screw you. Most only offer "Limited Editions" of software or trial versions. Not the full versions like years ago. So basically get the most hardware you think you'll need for your buck, then work on the software.

My HP laptop has been pretty good (its at least 5 years old now and is used every day) with the exception of the DVD burner dying after burning less than 5 DVD's. I replaced that myself for $60 or so.

All my desktops have been custom builds. If I was buying a name brand, would probably stick with HP.

I personally wouldnt touch anything that was Gateway or even worse E3PC
