I just read an a fatal accident report from that airport from 2 years ago. The airport is at 7055 feet field elevation, which is hard enough on a naturally aspirated propellar driven aircraft. You add the summer heat to that and high winds, and probably an overweight aircraft and thats a recipe for disaster. The pilot should've known better

I don't want anyone to take what I said the wrong way. Its horrible to hear about an accident like this. The aviation community hates to hear about these things. One thing I have to say about the FAA and NTSB is they do extremely thorough investigations into aviation accidents, and they use their findings to further educate the community and try to prevent tragedies like this from happening. There is a wealth of knowledge on the FAA's website as well as the NTSB's. Most of the training you have to go thru to become a pilot isn't about how to fly, but why you fly, and more importantly when and why you don't. From the first day of training, we teach ADM, or Aeronautical-Decision Making. Its the strategic thinking process for making decisions that deal with life and death, like go or no-go decisions. All good pilot training is very safety-oriented. I, for one, try to set a good example of safety and good decision making for my students, because if you do something unsafe, the student will think its okay because their instructor did it and got away with it. Unfortunately sometimes, we make bad decisions, and all of us are guilty of it at some time or another, and sometimes we pay for it dearly. Im very sorry to hear about this accident and my prayers go out to their family and friends and ya'lls community.

Sorry to hear about the crash and the family, I know that can be hard on a small community.
On another note, I grew up in Arizona and thought I had seen the entire state driving around, between rodeo, hunting and camping, but I had to get on Google Earth to find Springerville. I guess I missed a big chunk of the state. It's on my list for my next trip home.

Here is a link to the preliminary accident report from the NTSB. The airplane was a 300HP Piper Lance, similar to the attached picture.
