I have had one for 6 six years and love mine, never had any fail to fire, I don't have the M model, but get on the XD forum to find out more.
The only change I have made to mine so far is going with Don's glide and heavier spring 22# to reduce the recoil and to get back on target quicker.
The gun is easy to keep clean as I carry it for CCW, so I only need to clean it after firing, but I do field strip as you can do it in seconds every 6 months just to wipe down all parts to keep it lubed and protected.

ive shot the xds before and they are ok...ive got an ed brown 1911 and once u shoot the best you cant go back...it also depends on what u wanna do with it...in my case most of my guns are .45's bc i hunt hogs and need more stopping power than a 9mm or .40 can muster. in your case you may just want a chl gun in which case the xd is prty good...just do ur hw and if you can find someone who owns one try it out...i was buying a colt 1911 and i shot my friends a few times and didnt like it...then i shot t he kimber SIS ultra carry II and fell in love
