Sat gonna take my neice and nephew out and and set them down with the ol' Marlin .22. This will be the first time pulling the trigger for either of them, but they've both been bugging their mom for "uncle brian" to teach them how to shoot for several months. Should be fun. Sunday will feature a cookout at the in-laws, with grilled steaks and fresh sweet-corn!

Wish I had some explosives to play with

Wow. I get to be the lame one huh? Helping a friend tomorrow putting in a new floor in his house. Then spread out over the weekend I have a couple horses that need rode, some fence I need to fix. Some big damn holes in my driveway to fill in before winter gets here and a bunch of wires that need reconnected and a axle seal to fix on my Dodge. If I'm feeling ambitious I may even clean my house and redo the wiring on my clearance lights that I installed last year. I've almost forgotten what my truck looks like with a headliner.

I certainly hope that's not part of the plan! They are old enough to learn, and to listen (12 and 14). I've been teaching family, both young and old, the fundamentals of safe shooting for the last few years. Usually, it's the adults that make me fear for my life more than the kids! I always start out by showing them the workings of the rifle (usually a single-shot bolt-action), and DRILL safety into their heads until they before they are even allowed to touch it. They sometimes get annoyed by my safety preaching, but that's just tough. At the end of the day when they are grinning ear-to-ear while busting clay targets at 50 yards, all while doing it safely, it equals a good day for all of us.

Here's a pic of my 7 year old nephew putting the hurt on a "ground hog" silhouette from 40 yds back in April. We're using his Dad's Marlin 25N .22 repeater with the help of a bi-pod since the rifle's stock is a bit too long for him. Dad's talking of getting him a single-shot Rossi youth-model for Christmas. It will be kept in my safe while not being used until he's well old enough to be trusted with it at home.
