Default Ford Ranger Problems

My girlfriend has a 2003 Ford Ranger 6cyl. This morning she had a problem. The truck was shuttering bad and had no power. She said a gray smoke/haze was coming out the tail pipe. All fluids are okay, once she shut it down and restarted drove fine the rest of the day. Any thoughts? I was thinks cap/rotor and plugs, gonna change them to be safe. What other causes might I look at?
