How many hours a week do you work?

Fellow bombers,

Just wondering what kind of hours everyone works around here. Where I live it's not uncommon for people to work 80hr weeks. I think that's ludicrous and I refuse to give in to the money-god doctrine that seems to be so common these days. I'm just wondering if everyone else works 60hr weeks or if it's expected or how common it is. I love 40hr work weeks, and my personal belief has always been "I work to live, I do not live to work". Ultimately we all do what we have to do in the end though.

Chief Engineer 06-04-2009 11:02 AM

12 hours a day for 28-42 days straight. But then again I only work 4-6 months a year. Any more than 6 months and I get bitchy.:tttt:

stkdram55 06-04-2009 11:04 AM

I just work 40 sometimes more but since the economy took a dump they aint giving out OT anymore and thats fine with me as long as i have my job:yeah:

FastCR 06-04-2009 11:05 AM

You forgot the "I don't work" option. :humm:

Personally my parents help me out with school and I make spending money buying and selling stuff I get for cheap.

stkdram55 06-04-2009 11:07 AM

your a bum

stkdram55 06-04-2009 11:08 AM

fixed the poll for ya ;)

K50 06-04-2009 11:16 AM

Holy CRAP.
Yeah, seasonal work like that isn't so bad, only working half the year makes up for it. But 60-80hrs a week year round would probably do me in, unless I REALLY liked my job. Thing is I don't think I'd be able to find a job that I love as much as the stuff that I do in my free time. :humm:

Like Stkdram55 said, not really any OT going around here for me either, I'm just glad to have a job, but I'm fine with <50hr weeks, it's nice having more free time, especially in summer. I currently spend 15hrs a week outside of work training for races, so I kind of need that extra free time.

FastCR 06-04-2009 11:20 AM

damn I already voted for less than 35. Yeah I'm a bum but turning a ~$5k profit every 6 months and probably $200 a month goes a long way.

Diesel Powered Rocket 06-04-2009 02:26 PM

I work between 60 and 70 hours a week. My work is seasonal and I may not work for a couple of months during the winter. I excavate trenches, grade and do some residential flatwork.

Benjamin 06-04-2009 02:42 PM

you mean how many hours do you work or how many hours you get paid for?

K50 06-04-2009 02:49 PM

Technically they should be the same :humm:
Do your billable hours vary greatly from your actual working hours?
I try to keep mine within a couple hours a week if there's any issues, I hate wasting time.
In my original question, I suppose just total working hours, regardless of if you're paid for it or not, is what I meant.

06 DIESEL 06-04-2009 05:34 PM

It all depends for me. Some weeks I work 30 hours, some I work 60 hours, some I work 80+ hours. The only thing that stays the same is the amount I bring home each paycheck. Salary has its advantages and disadvantages. Currently it is an advantage because I am barely doing anything at work but still getting paid good money to be there.

CumminsCrazed 06-04-2009 05:51 PM

45-50 hrs a week seasonally pouring concrete. Work from about April 1 till around week after thanksgiving. Am on call throughout the winter though.

sidekick 06-04-2009 05:55 PM

K50 06-04-2009 06:04 PM

Damn dude, how'd you break your femur?
I know two guys who broke their femurs. One guy in a bike race, the other guy broke it last year on a motorbike ride last summer. He was being a huge tool and nearly killed himself, he's lucky he's still alive. Now he can't afford his new sport bike so maybe he'll smarten up and see that life ain't all fun and games.

DB Admin 06-04-2009 06:21 PM

No formal heavy training but smart enough to figure 90% of it out.

personally I think two jobs isn't so bad. It's nice to mix things up, change the pace a bit, and at least if you're working 70hrs a week it's your choice that way. I can't stand doing the same job 70hrs a week, feels like my employer has me on a leash, like someone owns me. Don't have much of a life like that.
I was thinking of taking a second job in the winter in my down time to supplement my income, it's nice to have that second paycheque. :c:

TKC2000 06-12-2009 07:02 AM

the night time bar job is straight cash money, which is just fine with me.....:ok1:

yj junker 06-12-2009 11:16 AM

I work construction with my own for hire trucks(3),one of my drivers is guaranteed 60 hrs a week, and I just hired another driver tuesday and he has 39 hrs in in 4 days and was off by 9 this morning, last week I worked 7 12 hour days in the truck and a few hours a night on the trucks but off today because of a big rain storm too wet to work on the construction sites and too wet to put gravel down on the roads, why I do this I'm still not sure,we only work from may to december and a very little during the winter months:U:

torquey 06-12-2009 12:42 PM

im back to doin ironwork in the powerplants so 6 to 7 days a week and 12 to 16 hour days to get the job done and go home.:rocking:

REDRIDE13 06-12-2009 07:22 PM

i work 240 hrs a month. But weekly varries from 48hrs one week to 72 the next. I only work 10 days a month on 24hr shifts! I LOVE being a fireman

dieseldude03 06-13-2009 12:44 PM

unless i get called out to a road call, then the overtime starts.

txredman 06-14-2009 08:13 AM

I'm allowed to get up to 50 on a slow week - lately I've been working 75 to 85 hours, 6 days a week. Concrete work in Texas isn't really seasonal, it slows down a little in the colder months but doesn't really stop.

Diesel Dawgs Performance 06-14-2009 04:40 PM

50-60 here

M.Farragher 06-14-2009 04:59 PM

This is the crux of the issue.

I ran on the corporate treadmill for 20 years, and always said white collar workers needed a union. the problem is you fall into the all too common trap of thinking you need to spend more and more time in the office, or working on your job, to get ahead, or stay ahead of the next guy trying to get your job, or the next one up. Pretty soon your working 80 hrs a week, for 40 hrs of pay. You've cut your salary in hafl, and the corp. is getting fat because of it.

Dr. Evil 06-14-2009 05:29 PM

Yup - working extra hours for free isnt the best idea.

Mocho 06-14-2009 06:05 PM

40-50 just depends. Do seasonal concrete work. Work for my dad, can have as many hours as I want, but usually work only every second saturday, winter work didn't get finished so doing that on nights and weekends, extremly busy summer. Put in a few 18 hour days, just because that's the way it goes. Don't end up with more much hours, because you usually don't even work the next day. Guys don't bother showing up so get stiffed working even longer. Sure doesn't seem to be slow here, must be enough jobs because guys still don't care.

The overtime is nice, but 100% of it is going to savings.

But the best part is, only 11 more weeks of concrete, then I am done! No more! Going back to school, and won't miss the work at all. Then I will be among the ranks of the lazy bums :U:

skinnysfd 06-14-2009 06:32 PM

I work 48 a week at the firehouse( 24 hr shifts) and then when i get off i work anywhere from 40-60 hours at my construction business and i agree it seems like since this economic crisis my construction business has only got busier. I am not complaing though just means i get to do more to my truck and get my kids some cool stuff.

Well said man, well said.

SeaDrive 06-15-2009 10:07 AM

45-50 and I'm an office rat. Stare at a computer all day long. Salaried. Get here early so I can get work done before the rat race, but when the whistle blows I'm out the door. If I have a customer in big trouble, I'll put in the extra time but not for normal work, it stays right on my desk and waits for my arrival in the morning. My boss is a 12hr/day guy but hasn't ever pushed it on me (in 4 years) so I'm glad for that.
