I got rid of my Deere riding mower and I'm looking for a walk behind. Anybody got any suggestions. From what I've seen, they all appear to be about the same. the only difference I've noticed is the name on the side of the mower and who's prouder of there product. I thought about buying a deere again, but there pretty much identical to the Craftsman mowers, just a different color.

 

In my landscaping days I had one that mows on its own.
It drove itself, best way, less work..great for hills all you to do is hang on so it doesnt take off on ya...no pushing...i will see if i can find it to show you....... youll never go back to push mowers....:U

I'm definetly getting a self propelled! I've noticed they make rear and font wheel drive mowers. The rear wheel I would think is stronger and more reliable.

Yes rear wheel drive is better. It won't dig ruts in your yard and will climb hills. Front wheel drives lose traction when going uphill and are a pain.

I bought a Toro 4 years ago because I like the "personal pace" self propelled design. I love it now. It moves however fast you move so you aren't trying to hold some handle halfway down to slow down when needed. This is great as my yard is thick St. Augustine grass. When it gets thick I have to go slower. With the Personal Pace system, I just walk slower and the mower adjusts. Much easier. The mower has been trouble free for 4 years and I have a 12,000 sq ft yard I mow every week - 10 days for about 9 months of the year. I just change the oil and spark plug each year.

 

Those Toro's are one of my favorites as well. The only thing I hate about them is the Briggs & Stratton motor... They suck. Get a Tecumseh, or a Kohler and you'll be real happy you did. The only other thing I like on some other mowers are the caster front wheels, so you don't have to lift the mower to turn it, it actually helps grass health as well. Being that your not plunge cutting the grass, you run less risk of tearing the fibres rather than cutting them.

Personally, I like Husky equipment, but they're not real cheap. Too bad Stihl doesn't make a mower... I'd buy one to match the rest of my stuff, saws, trimmers, hedgers...

 

I got a cheapo MTD from Fleet-Farm. I've had it for 5 years so far and it's been damn good to me.

It replaced another MTD which would still be with us today if someone hadn't gotten mad and repeatedly slammed it against a big cotton wood when it wasn't running right.

 

I've always wondered if husky mowers are as amazing as their saws, our 257 husky saw's been really good to us.

as much junk as they make, I've been happy with the two craftsman mowers I've got(well, the one is at least 15 years old, when they were still making good stuff...) the newer one is so-so...eh, I'd buy one on clearance...

is there a push mower with AWD, open diffs and a turbo...? ooh, I just noticed on Husky's site they have a hovercraft mower! you know you want to try it...

 

In my case I buy the cheapest mower I can get that is self propelled and adjustable height and throw it out and the end of the year. It's usually under $200 if you find it on sale and get at least $30 for it from the used mower guys if it's still runnin right. Doin this I never have to fight gettin it started again in the spring after it's sat for months, don't have to store it and walk around it all those months either and I never have to worry about workin on one.
