So I just went to feed my dogs and one of them had two ticks on his ear. I have found alot of stuff that will take care of it for the dogs but what can I use on the yard that would be pet safe? This seriously gross's me out and I have no idea where they came from. From what I can tell it was a dog tick if that helps any.

 

Did you rip them in half?

I don't know much about ticks other then you have to rip them in half when you find one.

 

We pulled them out with a whole bunch of paper towels then smashed them. The dog they were on is a puppy and there was no way we could get him to be still long enough for tweezers. From what I have read online it said we did it right but I really have no idea.

Its just sick and I really have no idea why we have them. No one around us has over grown grass or anything like that. Im almost wondering if it maybe came from the guy that mows our grass, like if he brought it from another yard or something.

 

One other way to extract them, if they cooperate, is poke something hot on their azz end. They usually back out and won't have to worry about leaving anything behind.

 

Ya gotta be real careful when removing ticks cause there heads detach and will stay in the skin and then the skin becomes infected and then it's off to the Vet. As mentioned above, try to burn there rear end with something, cigarette or something like that, then they will back right out. You'll need to do this especially if the tick has been on awhile and is full of blood.

 

They don't just come from overgrown grass. You find ticks in your yard, in brush, hardwoods, swamps, everywhere. As a hunter I can go out for a few hours and come back with at least 2 or 3 ticks on me. Thats why you need to wear longs pants, and a long sleeve shirt when you go out. The heat thing works, but dog's really hate it, you usually end up having to use tweezers. My vet recommends putting salve on the area that was bitten after you pull the tick out, if the head is left behind it keeps it from getting infected and it will eventually pull the head out by loosening up the skin around it and swelling the head of the tick.

 

everything I found online said that you are not suppose to get them out with heat. I know I was always told that as a kid but dont know why its changed.

We dont live anywhere close to a swamp, creek, river, woods anything like that. The guy that takes care of our yard just put mulch in and I heard you can get it from that.

We bought some spray for the yard and a few differet things for the dogs. I called my mom who use to be a dog breeder to see if she ever had the problem. She said that if we could only find two ticks then we probably caught it really early and should be fairly quick to get rid of. I freakin hope cause they gross me out.

 

you can paint them with nail polish and they wont be able to breathe, and when they pop their head out knock them off and light them on fire

 

your idea sounds like alot more fun I could even paint them pink. We got the stuff to spray the yard and now its raining outside

I just feel bad because once we spray the yard the dogs are going to have to stay in the garage because we couldnt find anything that was safe to use around them. We didnt get them the collars because they play alot and we were afraid they would get the stuff in their mouth but we got those drops you put on them.

im feeling great so far just a little sick from time to time, I have my good days and bad day's. Im just ready to finally get to go shopping hahaha.

 

We use a spray in our yard that attaches to the water hose and you just cover the yard with it. The dogs aren't allowed out when the ground is still wet, but once it dries they are fine. We got it at Lowe's...

Stuff like Frontline also stops ticks from biting but I don't like the stuff... I found that the bugs will stay on them but not bite them and theif you let the dogs in side the bugs simply jump off and live in your furniture, on you, etc. Real pain in the butt.

If it starts to get really bad here, I just get the Hart flea and tick spray. It comes in a spray bottle and you just coat them down with it. But you have to reapply it if the dogs get wet.

As far as plucking them out goes, I just pull them out and flush them down the toilet. If the head does get stuck, I just keep an eye on the spot for the next couple of days. Usually the skin will push it out on its own. If it does start to look infected you can use the same stuff as you would on a human to clean it up.

Ticks can come from anywhere at any time just like any other bug... You can keep your grass cut, not be anywhere near woods, swamps, etc. And for some reason, you will always find ticks when the weather is warm...
