Which Kel-Tec?- Now With Pictures
I've been a good little boy and have been saving my pennies so I can by me a new shoot em up toy. I was looking at the usual AK derivatives, AR-15s, Mini 14s, etc. but I think I'm going to go with something from Kel-Tec. I've read the reviews which all seemed pretty good and even had the chance to put my hands on a couple of their models. I also have it stuck in my head that I want 5.56 chamber.
I've even thought about retiring my current trusty 12 gauge as my primary home defense weapon and implementing the Kel-Tec. Mostly it'll be used to send paper and menacing red squirrels to the promise land.
I'm torn between their PLR-16 and their SU-16C models. They both accept the typical AR-15 magazines too. The wife likes the rifle but I like the pistol. I would especially love to see the PLR-16 using an AR's drum.
PLR-16 in action:
Anybody want to weigh in on this?

I think it will be fun. My understanding is the 5.56 and the .223 are the same other than the 5.56 has higher pressures. So basically you can shoot a .223 out of a 5.56 but not the other way around. I might be wrong but that's how I understand it anyway.
I got turned on to Kel-Tec by my pops too. He has one of their 9mm handguns. I can't remember which model but it's smaller than my hand and really light. I imagine it would be one hell of a pocket gun.

Personally I would go with the PLR-16 since you're looking to use it as a home defense weapon. The 1913 rail system is very reliable and combined with the PLR you have a wide range of hardware and accessories that it will accept. The only thing to really watch out for on these is the firing pin. Because of the design and material used it will fire flawlessly even though it is getting wore down and then all of the sudden it will break or stick. Not that big a deal if it does but just make sure you point it down and do a proper download at that point because it could dislodge and fire the weapon. I've found in the past, especially with the old 1911's that if it stick's while firing just give a good solid wack on the bottom of the magazine while pointed downrange and it will start working again. BTW- If you're looking for a home defense weapon only, this would not be my weapon of choice.
