Default Need Laptop Computer Advice

My kid had a house fire over at school and he lost everything but himself. So at the moment I need to find a laptop for him for school and internet use. I've been lookin around the net at refurbished but let me be the first to admit that I know nothin more about these things then how to turn them on and peck at the keys. So how about some suggestions on what models and the best place to get one a these toys from. Keeping in mind that I want somethin that is gonna keep him in business but price is an issue. Gotta spend what ya gotta spend but I'm not lookin for somethin that he can design rockets on, just do his papers and whatever else a college kid does on a puter that I may not wanna know about. Thanks.

If you can spare $800-$1000, get a Toshiba. Usually Better Buy or Circus City has a good selection. I had 2 of em, best laptop I ever bought. If you can, find one w/ around 1 0r 2 gig of memory, 100 gig of HD space.

If it comes down to that what it takes to get him back in business, I guess that's what I'll have to spend. Right now were also tryin to get him some of the basics like clothes and new school books to though so I hope it's not gonna cost that much.

The family that lives across the the street from thier house was nice enough to take in him and one of his room mates until they find someplace new so that saved our asses on that and his auto insurance isn't exactly breakin any speed records to pay off on his car yet that was in the garage. What a mess.

You should be able to pick up a basic laptop for $500. If you get one with Vista, I would get at least 2 GB or RAM. And I would stay away from celeron processors. Ive read that the factory refurbs are as good as a new one. Also, try to get one that comes with a Windows CD.

Theres probably some good deals here:

Laptop Computers, Laptops, Notebooks, Notebook Computers, Notebook PC, Cheap Laptop Computers TigerDirect.com

Hey, something just crossed my mind. This is not really a laptop but if all he needs is something basic to do word processing, surfing the net, spreadsheets, internet etc. :

EEE PCs in Canada at Memory Express Computers

Asus Eee PC 4G Surf Super Mobile Internet Device, Galaxy Black w/ 7in LCD, 512MB, 4GB SSD, 802.11b/g at Memory Express Computers

hey Bubba, you find a lappy yet? I'm currently typing on a Toshiba in my dad's shop, my roommate has a Toshiba, both have done very well for a long time.

if you go to Ben's Bargains and do a search for 'laptop', it scours the web for coupons and sales, it searches the mentioned Tiger Direct(great site) and a lot of the manufacturers, like Dell Outlet.
currently on ben's bargains there's a 15% off deal on Dell refurbs priced 599 and up. or there's a compaq presario at BestBuy's outlet for $470 shipped that looks like a good one but, oh wait it says it's Vista, not XP...are there still comps available without Vista?
