Default Push Button Start

this weekend I left the key on in my CJ7 and some how it toasted the starting solenoid or the key switch. So I had to start it by shorting the two posts on the solenoid with a screw driver.

I have a push button switch and want to make it a push start. so all i have to do is connect the wires to the solenoid and be done with it? I will have to turn the key to the on position and leave it there while I start it and run it though
will this be ok?

I think you'll be fine. We ran my old Ramcharger like that for years. That solenoid wire is pretty low amperage.

You have a "just in case" mounted to the rollbar anyway, don't ya?

if you mean a fire extinguisher. of course.

I romped on her pretty good this weekend. there was still a foot of packed ice/snow up in the woods. the tire chains work awesome! my son was loving it.

I ran it through a relay then to the starter wire.

I have had the same thing happen in the past with another Dodge truck I had, thats why I put the push button in this truck. Just in case it happens again.

Yep, what RP said. Just make sure you run it through a relay and all is good.

why is the relay needed? I'm using the key switch to get power to the heater and other functions and I'm just using the start button to start the vehicle. I can see wanting to have a relay that is held in to power 12v circuits but if it is just a switch to send power to the starter than it shouldn't need a relay because once the engine starts the power running there isn't needed.

I don't get it again. If you still need the key to start it then how is having this button helping if you lose a key.

I can start it now with out the key. and I am not trying to eliminate the key I am just avoiding a $20 solenoid when I already have a free push button for push starting.
