Getting over it some, but still hard. Miss her like crazy. She has always been part of my childhood for as long as I can remember. When you own a dog, you never expect it to be hard to say goodbye. You never consider them dieing when you are in the yard playing with them, but it hits you like a fist in the face when it happens. It is always tough to lose a companion. Hope all is well for the rest of ya.

I dreamt last night that shelly was still alive and was sitting next to me being petted.

i absolutely hate to hear that. i see my pets as parts of my family. we put down a horse last year that was 7 years old that felt like family also. our 26 year old horse is on his last couple months too we are afraid.. that will be even tougher.

4 months ago we put down our 16 year old chocolate lab. (im 18 years old) so he has been a HUGE part of my life... he ran away once for 65 days and we found him.. he had been shot, and was starving. but he recovered. he was ran over 3 times in front of my house but miracuoulsy survived all of those without a scratch.. i hate to lose a part of the family, but thats the thing with pets. they cant last as long as we do, sadly. i like my pets better than i do most people.. i woke up one morning after he had been sick for a few days to find him braindead pretty much.. organs shut down, eyesight went out, hearing left. when i touched him he jerked, so i knew he had no senses or anything. had to put him down myself, and it was THE hardest single thing ive ever done in my life. i cried like a baby im not going to lie.. i laid in bed and cried plain and simple..

i wish you the best of luck my friend!

It's weird how you can get take a beating or have your old lady leave you but loosing your dog will make you cry. I'm with you on this one. No shame in it.

I know what it is to lose a pet, and having to take it to the vet to put one down...

We had a Irish Setter that reached 19yrs age, and we eventually had to take her to the vet and have her put asleep because she had bad arthiritis. The guilt always eats up my insides...

We recently had our Rottweiler Ugla leave us and she just went to sleep and then her breathing got heavier and heavier and eventually she stopped breathing, beautiful moment and she just went away in the manner nature intended...

We have two more Rottweilers and two Miniature Pinschers in our household and you could see that they were shook up and realizing what was going on...

Our older Miniature Pinscher would watch over her and after she left he laid down with her and nobody could come close to her...

If you care i can post pretty pictures of my MinPin Icarus, as he's watching over her...

Dogs are the most wonderful animals in the world... I hate cats... so do my dogs

We took the yellar lab and she has heart worms too, but she will live too. All we have to do is squirt a flavored med into their mouth once a day and a few pills a day. We also caught them up on their shots and got them new collars. We decided to hold off on getting another dog until the others pass on. I guess our only other black lab, pepper, will be my new dog. No one will ever replace Shelly though. And yes, I cried too. I also cried today when I heard Eric Clapton's song tears in heaven.

it takes a lot for a grown man to cry, but animals will cause that effect on so many people. i think one major reason is they dont judge or complain and are never in a bad mood. theres nothing a dog can do to make you upset really. i swear my brown lab, Reese, was smarter than most people. my dad regrets to this day ever getting him fixed.. he had one litter of puppies and the one we kept was so much like him, but he ran away..

sorry to hear about your Bf.Truck guy.....Shelly sounds like she has a good life with you. I never knew heart worms could kill a pet,or they were so aggresive?
how do they get passed from dog to dog? |Hayden was just in the vet with a ear infection. hes better now..I hope you never had to pay for the surgery after she died? lucky you got the others checked out... what were the symptoms of it?

They are not contagious through each other, but through mosquitoes that are carrying them. When the infected mosquito bites the animal and it can be in the dog for a few years with nearly no symptoms. The only way we even knew was when shelly would not come to us very easily and later started throwing up. The only symptom we saw in goldy was excessive panting on a beautiful day at 70 degrees. The reason for it was the worms go into the lungs and cause poor air circulation, causing her to pant like she was having trouble breathing as if there was low oxygen levels. The reason shelly passed on was her body was so sick it couldn't handle the surgery. The worms block some of the blood flow, and she was not getting enough so she suddenly lost a bunch of weight over the course of three days. The testing for it was very easily done with a blood test. The trick is to get it under control before they spread too severely. All the dog has to do is take a few pills a day a about the size of a pea and take a medicine by mouth syringe once a day. I am just glad we can save the others. But yes, we do have to pay for the surgery but we don't mind because the vet did there best and they shouldn't have to pay for my dogs health problems. She was willing to work out a payment plan for the 400 dollar bill for us. The vet is also coming out sometime this week or next to give our horses there shots too. We ask found out that one of our horses is about 90-95 in horse years! I think I just need to cope and push through for shelly though. But I would suggest to anyone to keep their animals in check and healthy. Hope all is good for others.

Sorry for your loss bud. It sucks losing your dog. They are always there for you and no matter what are happy to see you. I had to put mine down a few years back and it was by far the toughest thing I've had to do. Time won't heal it all but will help you cope

Thanks man. It is helpful to to know people still care. Got some name tags for their collars today and will be taking them more places. Shelly went many a place with me. Everywhere from fort worth to abilene to lubbock to everywhere else I could imagine. Goldy would be a bit too rowdy over the road if more than two dogs or get tangled up in the leashes. Pepper will be going more places with me and my brother will keep goldy going with him places.
