Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that lets you commit suicide by running your car in your closed garage, and can cause chronic health problems in lower concentrations as well. Diesels don't produce much at all carbon monoxide, and gasoline engines are running so lean anymore that their production of CO is pretty well managed as well.
Carbon dioxide is the totally harmless gas that we breath out, what plants breath in, the unavoidable product of any combustion reaction, and what supposedly causes global warming. The pollution policy of the US for the last 40 years has been dedicated to decreasing all other emissions at the expense of increasing carbon dioxide emissions. Carbon dioxide has hence never been regulated in the United States before, but is now set to be regulated with the new cap-and-trade schemes.
Limiting of carbon dioxide emissions has no immediate health benefit, and the only way around it is through the use of alternative energy. So it's different from anything the EPA has done in the past. Depending on where a cap is set, it might gradually push towards alternative energy in a positive way or cause the price of electricity to go up by a factor of ten. And I have yet to hear about any explicit protections for the coal industry in the bill.

yeah so the plants take care of all the carbon dioxide that is put into the air...which in turn is changed back to O2 by the plants for us in turn to breathe, so basically if they cut out carbon dioxide then plants will die from having nothing to breathe alot of the algae in the ocean and waters will be killed off in turn screwing up the food chain in the water and eventuallly effecting land animals also...
Hmmm, how is this gonna help us in the long run...see if people would just remember junior high science then they wouldnt believe all these yahoo's and would just tell them to shove it when they start spouting off about global warming...

I cant believe I waited so long to read this thread. Two years ago while on a study abroad trip to Germany I spoke with the Vice President/Head of the alternative fuels department for Mercedes. Two years ago BlueTec and AdBlue were optional on European OTR trucks leading up to mandatory addition of such systems by Euro 5 emissions. Speaking directly with the VP at Mercedes he described how the system works and what they can do with their engines. Adblue is injected into the exhaust then trapped by a catalytic converter.. see video for how the chemistry works. Bluetec systems reduce NOx emissions allowing engine manufacturers to run higher compression and cylinder temps. This increases power but also increases the production of NOx which conveniently is then trapped by the AdBlue. Mercedes OTR trucks equipped with BlueTec will not shut down if they run out of AdBlue .. the engine computer will however reduce power to a point where the truck will only be capable of approx 40mph (if I remember the speed correctly). This allows the truck to be driven but encourages the driver to refill the AdBlue tank. A benefit of all of this is that with the redesigned engines fuel economy will increase.
It doesn't matter if you like the technology or not, it's coming. Personally I don't know if the cost of the AdBlue will out weigh the financial gain of increased fuel economy or not. Yes some engine manufacturers are struggling with this. Navistar has partnered with M.A.N. (amazing German engine manufacturer in case you didn't know or haven't been through the factory in Nuremberg, Germany
) to build their next generation of engines. A lot of things will probably change in the next couple of years but I think Mercedes has this system ironed out pretty well .. I don't exactly like the idea but at least we know it works on European engines.

So about a month ago i was in Portland at the freightlienr training center and got to go to the proto tyoe building. still in proto type was the final assembly of the 2010 cascadia with the ISX cummins, had a DPF/Urea system call a TWO BOX system. The urea gets injected after the dpf system. still egr, still dpf, addin Urea! no changes or cutting back the amounts of egr, just keep adding patches to the system...... It will never end. now i here that a couple of years ago Oregon adopted California's emmissions standards and not to much longer will be inforcing them state wide. !@#$ This sucks. Oh well. Adding more problems just keeps me and my shop even busier!!!! Oh and the light duty truck market gets the unwelcome update as well. the tank on the new frightliner is like 15 gallons and will be filled at or close to every other fill up of the fuel tanks. and it will only shut you down if you ignore the empty light for so long. a light is suppose to come on letting you know its empty. then a critical stage will be set then after so long a shut down sequence is suppose to be put into action. bla bla bla bla!!!!!!!

Those who refuse to change (ie anyone running incylinder EGR) will suffer as this is another half bake.
Just my opinion mind you.
Reason for forcing development of this technology was highway toll. It is depending from weight, amount of axles and emisson class.
Emission class plays the most important part in calculating toll.
Highway speed to semis above 7,5t is limited to 55miles anyway.
You can get a 5 gallon can of adblue at every gas station in Europe.

We bought 15 2008 freightliner’s this year that a large company bought and set on a lot because of the new regulations coming out. They had over 1,000 trucks on the yard and they auctioned off 300 trucks in groups of 10 (we split a group with a smaller company). I know where there are more than 4,000 trucks sitting around on yards that have not been out into use yet. I’m wondering how many other yards are around the US?
I say they need…
Stop cutting down the rain forest and it will help the CO issues.
Change out all the oil dependent power plants with nuclear plants.
Stop calling it global warming and start calling it global wobble.
As Deezel Stink3r says reduce big rigs to 55 mph across the US and fine the crap out of speeders.
