...

And yes, they don't use a clutch 95% of the time... really just stop and starts.

I've driven a twin stick dump truck before, an old Mack. It was only a ten speed though. The linkage on the drop box siezed so we put the shifter straight ontop of the box, you literally had to reach behind you to drop the thing into high or low gear, then start your shifting again, usually in 3rd gear, then through 5th. Downshifting in that sucker was fun, .

Twin sticks are awesome. My Grandpa used to get the connectors at the truck-stops in the 60's and connect the 2 sticks togather and he could shift both sticks with one hand,of course he started driving when he was 17.My dad learned to drive a semi with a 5x5,he said you either learned quick or you didnt drive.Ezra.

my dad told me about how the old county plow trucks back in ohio used to have twin sticks in them when he was driving them in the winter........id love to have one.......
Logan, my dad's '67 Diamond Reo is a twin'd Silver 92 with a 6 & 4. When you're ready for your CDL test. hehe

They actually (twin sticks) aren't that hard to drive.....with practice. I had to learn on one before the old coot would let me drive a Roadranger.

Jenn,

The brownie is basically a splitter box with reduction(s), direct, and overdrive. 1st gear in a 4spd brownie like like low-under in a 8LL (15spd Low) Roadranger...not good for much over 20mph.

Essentially with a 6 & 4 you'd start out, for all practical educational purposes, the main in 1st with the brownie in 2nd (#1 under), shift the main 1-2-3-4-5-6, drop the brownie into 3rd (direct), throw the main back into 2nd and go 2-3-4-5-6 then put the brownie into 4th (overdrive), put the main back into 2nd, and go 2-3-4-5-6 again....by now you're probably doing 110mph or so with 4.10's and decent horsepower.

You can cheat 'em big time, make huge splits because to run through all the gears---like the video drivers are doing---will take a lot of shifting for not a lot of forward momentum.

Or, you can be really nuts and put a Roadranger in front of a brownie and have 13 & 4....a few guys around here do it...and yea they don't have a ****ing clue what gear they're in half the time.....34th, 23rd, hell I don't remember....

Hope this helps,

Dan-

How in heck does that work, and how many gears does that actually come out to? Forget goin through em, I'd say the pain is downshiftin and figurin out where the hell you are. Guess you'd just have to drive with your ears, LOL.

5 & 4 = 20....cool.

6 & 4 = 24....hella cool.

13 & 4 = 52....ridiculous but hella cool.

15 & 4 = 60....completely pointlessly ridiculous but hella cool.
