Do you have access to a Digital multi meter?
If so you can check it out very easy.

-Just set it to the 20V DC range.
-Ground one probe to the bare metal of the frame (like a door hinge or battery minus pole) and check the wiring.
( Don't be afraid to cause a short as long as you set the multimeter to DC and to the proper range, internal resistance of the multimeter is very high and will prevent damage! Do not use one of those test lights! They are crap and built for cars and trucks like the ford T model !)
-There should be one wire with constant 12V.
-There will be one wire only alive with 12V while turning on ACC.
-Another one will be alive when switching on illumination.
-Speaker lines have mostly dual color coded lines but one of the colors is the same at both lines.
- Ground wires are mostly thicker than others and are coded black or brown. the meter will show a value close to zero, because you measure the voltage potential of the frame
If you are going for better sound use only ACC wires and illumination. Some good added ground and power wires will enhance sound quality a lot!
Maybe you take a picture of the lines and post it- Sometimes it is easier to watch and to tell...

I got the Wal*Mart adapter that had the 2 1st gen plugs and the 2nd gen plug on it, cut the 2 1st gen plugs off, shortened the wires on my radio plug to about 2.5" or so, and wired it together. I shortened the wires to keep from having that mess of un-needed wire behind the radio. So far it works fine. My particular radio is always illuminated so I cut the illumination wire and ran the light wire for my gauges to it.
