When to add head studs
I was wondering what PSI of boost will my stock head gasket take? Also when i added head studs can i put them in one at a time on a high mileage engine or should i replace the head gasket anyhow
ive heard that the stock head gasket can handle about 45psi..im sure someone else will chime in soon and say they are running 55 psi with stock head bolts. and i would just go ahead and replace the gasket on a high mileage engine. knock out 2 birds with one stone
Chiming in!
I'm peaking at 57PSI, and I KNOW I am on borrowed time. Head gaskets can go at anytime, regardless of boost. As for a time to change them, I would say 40psi and play it safe.
You can change them out one at a time without any negative side effects.

My dads 99 will pull 60lbs. Stock bolts and gasket. He did lube and retorque the factory bolts. His truck 450k+ miles now. Had the same setup since 100k. I will say though, he doesnt beat on the truck all the time, doesnt tow heavy alot, never races and never pulled a sled. He just plays with it now and then. I cant see that much boost being sustainable for any amount of time. I would bet hes never held the boost that high for even 7 or 8 seconds at a time.
