Diesel for Dummies?
I've been poking around trying to find some information without much luck (theres sooo much here!). I'm considering a diesel truck but don't know a ton about them. I was generator mechanic (diesel) in the Army so I'm not totally clueless in regards to mechanics, more or less I was a glorified parts replacer though. I'm looking for a "diesel for dummies" section to be honest! Why do they generate more torque then a gas engine? Why are the so fuel efficient etc., etc., etc. I don't expect someone to answer all my questions but if someone could point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.

the best thing I can see for you to do is to pick what brand you would be interested in the most then just start reading threads here, all the info you need is here it just takes a long time to learn it all

I've read some of the other threads. The problem is I only understand about half of what is being said. I figured that the basics should be the same regardless of what maker we are talking about.
It really depends on your wants/ needs? And your comfortability with the truck if that makes sense.all brands have pro's/ con's different furl mileage and vehicle longevity with major break downs, and alot depends on how it was drove/ used and maintenance by previous owner.if it were me and I was looking at two trucks and one was being sold by a younger kid whose had the vehicle or an older wiser man Id take the older mans vehicle simply because 9.5 out of ten times he hasn't beat the living dog **** out of the truck and ha taken care of it.

Oh ok read it wrong. Well common mods are gauges, intake, chip or programmer custom tuned, then injectors, turbos and the list goes on and on. As for your other questions I cannot answer man sorry.

Diesel has more energy than gas. That's why they are more powerful.

First diesel produce more torque at lowerend, and use less horsepower but produce a ton of torque. Reason because of the turbo creates intake manifold pressure and diesel has more BTU than gasoline quite significantly. Also because the injecotors on a diesel are high pressure and antomonize better than gasoline there for it burns more efficiently, more efficient you are the more power you create... Since diesels are low RPMS is why their longivity is so good. Any how Im a Cummins guy they are great engines and endless possibilities for them, second choice is a powerstroke prefferbly a 7.3, and to not create any issues with 6.0L Powerstroke lovers I will not say anything about em, Im currently trying to revive mine. And also I would take a Detroit before a I take a D max and that is strictly oppinon and preffence. Like said above what you want, and needs are we deterine what is best to buy, I would suggest a cummins if you are towing above 70 percent of the time. Every truck gonna break, not an IF its WHEN...
