mercon v or dexron/mercon?
for a 01, i will be towing everyday, pretty heavy (upwards of 25k total), 61k on it (unknown what has been done though, i just bought this). Advance Auto says mercon 5, but my tranny mechanic says dexron/mercon...sooooooooooooooo?????
The 5 is better and might as well run something way better that exceeds both ratings! Change the filter and run some synthetic it is worth the extra pennies for sure.

All mercon/dexron is is a "universal" fluid for both GM and ford. Our universal ATF is works the same...meets several specs. Mercon is just a ford product. You do want to be sure your fluid meets the mercon spec. Now I may be mistaken but I don't believe plain mercon is even available anymore. They've gone to the mercon V, SP and LV these days??
appreciate it.my one mechanic told me the v is much better too...i got a new filter, and a bigger cooler to go with it...i'll get me some v and get to work this weekend!!! appreciate it fellas!
