Default Suggestions on turbo upgrade

Ok there's the story I need a new turbo but unclear on what to get. I would like something other then a stock unit and would like responses based on personal experiance. The bad I have PMR but not to worried about it. What is done to the truck already I have a ts tuner with 65, 85, 100, 120, and quite programs. I get a lot of turbo surge, and climb fast to 1200* get, have boost and egt gauges, 4" exhaust, intake and that's about it. Would also like more whistle and like to kick the crap out of a duramax stock( guy at work won't stop running his mouth) oh ya most importunely I have a 02 7.3l excursion 2wd and limited budget so most bang for buck.
Thanks

Look into the Garrett GTP38r turbo, it's an upgrade over the stock turbo and it will handle moderate mods if you choose do some later, like injectors. You can pay more money for other Turbos, but it doesn't sound like your trying to build a monster black smoke breather. Scott @Alligator Performance has a great price on the 38r and they a few left, at least when I picked up mine they did, and that was yesterday.

The 38r is supposed to sound more beastly over the stocker, I am putting mine in this weekend, I can let you know! Good Luck.

38R is about your only option for a drop in turbo... Be warned, they are loud, annoying so...

I would go with the 38R. Lots of turbo noise and plenty of room to grow

The BD Thruster is no where near as good a choice as the GTP38R. The Thruster uses a journal bearing like the stock turbo does. At higher boost levels, the journal bearing is not as reliable. The 38R uses a ball bearing and is better able to withstand the load from higher boost levels.

Not really correct, a Ball Bearing turbo is no more strong then a Journal Bearing turbo, some would argue that a JB would be stronger.

The only clear benifit of a BB turbo is spool up.

I agree that the 38R would be a better choice of those two, but only because the 38R will spool quicker.
