Default Turbo go boom!!

A buddy of mine was running an HX40 with a 8 blade 58mm wheel (before you ask, this was an actual holset HX40, not a knock off) on his 98.5. going down a local road, he decided to mash it, thing hit roughly 50 lbs and this was the result

Turbo go boom!!!

So we limp it to a field down the road and make a call, go get my truck, pulled him back, took turbo apart expecting to find a busted shaft, but we find this

The bearing housing exploded!!

Shaft in one piece but turbine wheel is junk and shaft is bent

Luckily the compressor wheel and housing survived and seem to be in good shape with no visible damage somehow so we may get to possibly use them on a hybrid 35/40

Just a lesson why you shouldnt plug a wastgate on a hx40

no, all the metal from the exhaust wheel breaking up went out into the downpipe, not sure what kept the compressor wheel from hitting anything but it didnt somehow. Just broke the bearing housing, exhaust housing is scuffed up but can probably be smoothed out and reused as can the compressor housing and wheel. sad part is that im getting ready to put a super hx40 hybrid from HTT on my truck, may re think that

Don't rethink that. Like you said today, he was running too small of a housing and over-spun that turbo. They have there limits just like everything else.
