Default grey smoke

Hi I am new to diesels. I recently bought a 96' F350 and
She has a little grey smoke when running. I changed the fuel filter and it
Was covered with a grey film. Should I be thinking about having
The tank filter cleaned also.

Burns your nose . When I started her this morning she
Would turn over, but once you let off the gas she cut off.
Had to keep the rpm's up for a few seconds and then she
Ran fine.

Umm not to sure on the fuel pumps but I know they run off the came position... So maybe that could be it? Does it sound different?

Sounds fine, just has a constant grey smoke more when you excelerate.

when I started the big guy this morning she was real hard to start, took five or six tries before she would stay running. I think I screwed up when I changed the filter as I did not prime the fuel bulb...how bad is this.

that should have nothing to do with it, sounds like your glow plugs or glow plug controller are shot though, and possibly your ICP sensor or cam position sensor, they're pretty notorious for at least the ICP sensor

Thanks for the reply, talked to Diesel shop about getting glow plugs checked and also they will check out fuel system.
He also told me that with ultra low sulfur fuel, the engine could be running lean and I should put some additive in the tank.

ULSD has nothing to do with your gray smoke.

More then likely your Glow Plug Relay is shot, which is making the hard start issue.

The gray smoke could be low compression, turbo internal O rings or valve issues. Once warm does the smoke go away?

Once the truck warms up almost all of the smoke goes away, unless you go heavy on the right foot. If you look at the muffler you can tell it has a grey tint to it.
I plan to keep this truck for a long time so I want to get any of the worn parts fixed.

I guess I would have to agree with CSIPSD on the ULSD not causing the problem with the smoke, a batch or a bunch of batches of bad fuel could however lead to the problem but it's most likely a turbo seal, low compression (hopefully not) or valve issues, buddy of mine just had his 7.3 heads re-done and they cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $900 which isn't terrible
