Question Turbo housing

so looking through the vendor's sites i see turbo housings for the 7.3's but whats the difference and what will it do? like i see an industrial injections 1.00A/R and a .84. also from ats i see a wastegated turbo housing. would this add a wastegate to the factory non wastegated turbo?

If you plan on keeping your AA code injectors, you will have no need for a wastegate. The 1.0 A/R turbine housing seems to be a favorite among most folks, and having owned a truck pre-and post-housing, I would say that it's a very good "upgrade" for a stock truck. It will allow a slightly better (faster) spool at a little lower RPM while not too restrictive for high-RPM use.

The .84 A/R should really only be used with an intercooler. It will also have a tendency to make the engine feel a bit constipated at higher RPM/load due to creating more drive pressure vs. boost. It will spool like a mad chief at about 1600 RPM though.

so they're both smaller than stock? would this result in an actual loss of power? and as far as injectors i plan to go to stage one most likely. would that bring a wastegate into play. or would i just look for a bigger turbo?

You may have a little loss of high-RPM power, but you will gain low end response and boost.

The problem you will run into with "Stage 1" injectors is that you will run out of air. The stock compressor will barely supply enough air for maxed-out stock injectors. By installing a smaller turbine housing, you would be able to make up for that by spinning the compressor faster.....but you would only be hitting the limit of the airflow capabilities once bigger "sticks" are installed.

The best route to take with any injector upgrade on an OBS truck is to replace the turbocharger. Yes, it's expensive. Your stocker (with the 1.15 A/R turbine housing) will work fine with the Stage 1s but it will be smoky...no way around that without being able to move more air.

hmm maybe i should stay with stock sticks for now and if i need to burn a hole in my pocket then go bigger so let me just make sure i understand this right. with the smaller housing i'll gain boost faster but run out of power at higher rpm's? how will it be for cruising? and i'm guessing better accelleration

For highway cruising, you won't notice much difference. However, you will notice better acceleration and passing power. I wouldn't say that you will "run out of power" since stock sticks are weak anyway...but with larger injectors you may notice it.

ok and with a stock turbo housing you'd do better with the stage 1's? stage 1's really aren't much more than stock injectors well if you get remanned which i'm cheap so i would.

Cost wise, there is no sense in going back to the stock AA injectors. Besides, you can install stage 1 injectors with no tuning changes on a 95-97 truck and not know the difference. Once you get the money, then you can tune them to "squirt" more fuel.
