Bad Day To Be A Cummins
My truck ran into some problems on a trip from Idaho to North Dakota. I was on my way to ND when I suddenly, and without any noise or issue, lost 5th gear. Just cruising and suddenly the RPM's jumped up. I grabbed 4th and kept driving. I drove another 800 miles home and when I got home I noticed I had oil all over the back of my tailgate. I brought the truck in to have 5th gear welded back on and told them to figure out the oil leak as well. Turns out old Mr. Dowel Pin backed out and cracked my timing case for me. Fortunately it didn't take out any of the gears. So on one hunting trip, I lost 5th gear, cracked my timing case, and broke a vacume line causing cruise control to stop working. All in all not a good day.
Any idea what I can expect to pay for all this to get straitened out.

anyone have a good source for a timing gear case and what the price might be

i think your best bet is cummins for the new case it was like 194 I think or somewhere around there if you are able to do it yourself I would say do that it will be cheaper not sure how much a shop would cost though. good luck man.
I feel sorry for you to an extent. All Doidge diesel sites oIve been to talk about these two issues extensively. And they should have been taken care of (at least the KDP).
I guess this can be a lesson for anyone with a 12V or early 24V - make sure you tab that dowel pin !!!!! I know I slept better after mine was done.
I hope you can get it fixed reasonably cheap erik - good luck man.
PS, where in Idaho are you?

Thats just for the cover...if the timing case is broke its something like $800, iirc. All depends on what route the pin decided to take. Hopefully it didnt booger the gear up.
where the kdp goes it extends out so you would have to make your own and the have a lil I guess you could call it a ring that is supposed to keep it in I thought about tabbing mine but it looks like it will hold.
Now you guys got me all jittery since I dont know if mine is tabbed or not, and I am about to go on a ~2500 mile trip in my truck with 274k miles on the odo.... Perhaps I should pull out some tools and git r done this weekend.. Or get on my knees and pray hard! AHHHH

but I would get it doesnt take long or cost much.
