I have a California '01 Duramax with a P0380 code.

I measured ohms on all the glow plugs, the back four are all over 200 kilo-ohms, the front four are all under four ohms.


Do I replace all the plugs at once? Do I replace only the four? Am I stupid for buying the $80-100 for 8 glow plugs off eBay? Autozone wants $17 a piece for Autolites.


How do I test the glow plug controller? Just turn on the ignition while it's cold and verify that voltage is going to the plugs for a few seconds?

And does the fact that the rear four are bad but the front four are "good" tell us anything about something else that might be bad?

So I bought 8 Wellman "0058 dual-element self-regulating glow plugs made in the USA" for less than $90 off eBay. Good? Waste of money?


I'm planning on installing all eight at once and then keeping the few good ones in the engine now as spares. Then after the truck turns on four times with the good plugs the code should clear. Right?

Anything I should be careful of when installing these or is it just a straight-forward "thread out, thread in" operation?

 

My glow plug reley went out on one side but it caused the check engine light come on. Cant remember the code # but it said glow plug reley circuit A. Bought a new one from GM 160.00 or so. 10 miniutes to replace it myself. Dont know if this helps but I wouldnt think all of them would go out on one bank at the same time unless somthing else was causing it.

 

The "Service Engine Soon" light's been on for a year at least. It isn't all the plugs on one bank that are burned out, it's the back two on each bank. Do those have a common power source on a California truck?

 

I replaced all the glow plugs (F GM) and the SES light hasn't gone off yet.


What should it take for the light to clear, just turning the engine on and off four times? Turning it on and off four times while cold? Just cycling the ignition?

How do I test the controller?

And what does it mean when the rear-most cylinder on the driver's side bank is real wet on the inside?

 

Come on guys, these questions can't be too difficult. Diesel coming out of the glow plug hole has to mean something significant.
