Default How many miles is too much?

So I'm still in the market for a truck and I gotta tell you, you guys have been a big help, so thanks. Is it practical to buy a truck with between 200k and 250k miles. My truck will be my daily driver and while gettign soemthing with 115k miles on it would be great I dont really want to get into a payment plan and financing so soemthing in the $6-10 range would be better for me. What i want to know is how many miles is too much?

Thanks
DF92

If it was me I would try to find something below 200k. It doesn't really mater most diesels will go over that but there is still the rest of the truck to worry about. A lot of it depends on how well the truck was maintained. You could find one with 100k on it that has been trashed and I would pass but there are some out there that have over 300k on them that have been well maintained and would be a good truck.

Getting a truck from a state that has regular yearly inspections helps a ton. Just food for thought. If you live in a state that doesn't have inspections, it may be a better idea to look out of state. The motors will run forever, but it's still just a dodge ram 2500... Ball joints and that aren't cheap and it sucks to replace all that as soon as you buy the truck. My buddy got his 01 from Ohio, no inspections, and had to put $4200 into the truck to get it to pass PA inspection. The truck didn't look bad at all until we started tearing into it... I bought mine with 150,000 in PA and didn't have to put a dime into it for inspection. Got it for $10,500. Good deals are out there just be patient, don't buy a terd!

Arrow Diesel smoke from overseas......

Before you get hung up on any particular mileage number, look at the overall condition of the truck. I've seen many with less than 100K that I wouldn't touch and many that has 300K that I would still buy if it was what I could afford and what I wanted or needed. Look at past uses of the truck, maintenance records, overall condition and check with the previous owner if you can. You also need to keep in mind that any vehicle with high mileage will tend to have more money needed for upkeep. Older vehicles don't always mean cheaper vehicles. The motors and truck will last a long time if they are maintained properly.

I took a gamble on a clean 93 D350 with 480k on it, changed nothing on it but the oil and trans service and purring along just fine at 489k
