I'm sure you've all heard of California's new restrictive laws for diesels.

So...I wanted to put a new exhaust system on my truck. Can anyone give me a run-down on the new rules, or at least point me to something that does?

 

Sorry I can't help you with the specifics, but if I had to take a guess I'd bet you can't touch it.

So far I've spoken with two people who are knowledgeable about cars/trucks. One said that you couldn't do any modifications at all (though you could replace a stock exhaust system with a similar system that was stainless steel, for example). The other said that as long as you keep the catalytic converter, everything you did after the cat was legal (ie. straight pipes).

I've looked at the state's web page, and it didn't really clarify the issue. I was hoping someone here knew more about it.

I would say You can do what ever the H*ll You want with it as long as you can Pass a California Smog test ha ha I cant help you out I live in Nevada Bud But those are my Guesses...

I use to live in CA a couple yrs ago, and from what I can remember...either 06 or 07 and up you can't do anything to your truck...all diesels that require a smog came with a special exhaust tip that looks like the end of a rocket for CA rigs only...you have 2 choices;

1. Move out of CA like I did, no smog here in NM and the lowest property taxes in the country...hell, you can get 10 acres here for only 24K.

or 2. Get a pre diesel smog truck

From my understanding the smog check of diesels only effects the 06 or 07 and up trucks sold in CA...Funny thing, I was at performance shop getting parts for my old classic when a fellow at the counter who just bought a brand new crew cab HD and was bragging about the 12K he saved was jaw dropped to learn when the counter help told him that he can't buy ANY performance mods, nothing was available.

In my opinion, CA suck the royal one and I will never, I mean NEVER EVER go back to the pocket sucking state again
