Default Am I asking for problems?

I am new and I hope I put this post in the right section.

So I bought a 07 3500 Mega Cab SRW about 3 months ago. Love the truck and am happy with it stock..................

BUT.............

I want a little extra. Already have a S&B cold air intake coming for it. Trying to decide between a muffler delete pipe or just going with a new 4" Turbo back system. Some guys say ditch the resonator others say keep it and from what I have read the cat doesn't restrict much air flow, so that is still up in the air. Plans for egt, boost, and trans temp gauges but I am trying to find whats a good price for them. Just looking for the standard 3 pod on the pillar. And last but not least, a Smarty POD. this is what concerns me the most. This truck is a DD that gets roughly 500 miles a month put on it and then a couple 1500 mile trips pulling a 28' fith wheel. The truck already has 80k miles on it and I am hoping to get at least another 100k before any major repairs.

So what say DB? This isn't for blowing black smoke everywhere, but rather a reliable rig that has a little something extra.

is it the 5.9 or the 6.7?

imo, if you dont have to worry about emission checks, i would go with the 4-5 inch exhaust. i am guessing u have an auto? if so, the gauges u listed are 3 of the major ones u need. another gauge u need is the rail pressure gauge. good luck with it

Sorry, its a 5.9 with the auto.

No emissions up here so no worry there.

What's the reason for the rail pressure gauge?

it monitors the rail pressure. u will notice a problem with the fuel system at the rail pressure before u notice something is wrong else where in the fuel system.

Makes sense. Do these trucks have fueling problehs with mild builds? I have been reading through this forum the last couple nights but still have a ways to go trying to absorb all the info.

ive been on db for 2 years, and i still havent absorbed it all

no wheres near as bad as the vp44 trucks, but can be prone to it like any. its just one of them safty deals. better to catch a problem before it takes out somethin else

Ok here's what you need to do to make it a reliable puller!
Leave the exhuast alone it's already 4"
Get a valve body and Torque converter
The smarty is your best investment Play with it till you find what works best for you will take about 10 tank fulls to find your sweet spot
Put a 2 micron filter on it in front of the CP-3 "pre" This will save your injectors.
I would highly recommend a water injection system!
Something like a quadzilla commander monitor will read alot of things and not take up alot of space.
After this your on your own there are so many other things that are available but this will make your truck reliable and last a long time!
Only concern I would have is the stock injectors how much wear have they already indured? Not a cheap thing to replace so something to think about!

I'd pretty much agree w/dangerous with these adjustments:

Leave the exhuast alone it's already 4"
It's easy and cheap to lose the cat so since you are in MT, why not?

Get a valve body and Torque converter
Do you even know the state of trans service? Get new fluid and filter in there and leave anything else to do with the tranny for last. The 48RE is fine for up to around 400hp in stock form, driven sanely.

The smarty is your best investment
I'd go with a Jr. since it's a hauler, not a toy with big power goals. Even the Jr. has plenty of customization available for those who like to tinker.

Make this the #1 first priority

I would highly recommend a water injection system!
I like W/M too, but it's not high on the priority list. More like a nice-to-have. VERY nice-to-have if you tow heavy, tho....

Otherwise, EGT, Boost and Trans Temp - minimum.

Thanks for all the info guys.

My injectors have 80k miles on them and never had a pre-filter for the CP3 so is it worth putting one on now or just wait till these injectors go bad?

Had the Transmission gone through before I picked it up and the shop said it was as in good shape and then changed the fluids and put a new filter in. Really hopping it holds out for a long time.

I prefer the look of a 3 pod pillar vs. the commander but now I see I need 4 gauges. Any good place to put one in the dash or would it be possible to just hold off on the Fuel Pressure gauge till a little later and I find a good place for it? Or would you hold off on the trans temp gauge first? Like I said I only tow about 1500 miles a year and its maybe 8k pounds.
